NIAMEY, Niger (AP) -- Lawmakers in the West African nation of Niger, the world's number three producer of yellowcake uranium, voted Saturday to join an international treaty calling on signatories to ensure the protection of their nuclear materials.
Niger's president has 15 days to reject the bill or sign it into law.
The bill calls for adherence to the 1980 Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material. The treaty, adopted in Vienna, set technical standards for protecting plutonium and enriched uranium -- the material used in making nuclear bombs -- during transport.
Niger signed the treaty in 1985, but never adopted it as law at home.
"Niger ... must adhere to this convention," said a report issued by the national assembly's foreign affairs commission in Niamey. ...
...Only to Canada and Australia produce more yellowcake uranium than Niger. Uranium sales generate about two-thirds of impoverished Niger's export earnings.

"Niger signed the treaty in 1985, but never adopted it as law at home."
Interesting tidbit.
Great, now they can hire noted nuclear materials expert Joseph Wilson to monitor their compliance.
It is definitely not Nigerian, since the denizens of Nigeria call themselves by that moniker. Hence, the question remains ....what are people from Niger called?
If some Freeper knows the answer I would be quite curious to find out what it is. Thanks.
Nigerien, Nigerienne
Nigerans
Great. So now the treaty will be kept in a bank account and we'll have to send them money to see it.
Are you sure? Because that sounds too close to 'Nigerians.'
Is that true?
This is what I found:
Nigerien
Noun
A person from Niger or of Nigerien descent.
Translations
German: Nigrer m, Nigrerin f
Adjective
Of, from, or pertaining to Niger, the Nigerien people or the Nigerien language.

"Lawmakers in the West African nation of Niger..."
Oh, I thought Clinton was trying to make the news again.
B..but...but...why does Niger have to join this treaty now, twenty years after Niger signed it? I mean, according to former Ambassador Wilson, the security of Niger's yellowcake uranium is so incredibly foolproof we don't ever need to get our feathers ruffled if officials from a rogue nation go shopping there.
It's Nigerien for males and gender-neutral things, Nigerienne for females.
The accent in on the last syllable, whereas the accent for "Nigerian" is on the second.
Usually newspapers try to avoid confusion by calling them sitizens of the Republic of Niger.
Since when can Clinton vote on this treaty? He has been out of office for over three years.
