Christians look to form 'new nation' within U.S.
World Net Daily ^ | 4/24/04 | Joe Kovacs

Calling the approval of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts "the straw that broke the camel's back," a group of Christian activists is in the beginning stages of an effort to have one state secede from the United States to become its own sovereign nation.

"Our Christian republic has declined into a pagan democracy," says Cory Burnell, president of ChristianExodus.org, a non-profit corporation based in Tyler, Texas. "There are some issues people just can't take anymore, and [same-sex marriage] might finally wake up the complacent Christians."

Burnell is leading the charge for a peaceful secession of one state from the union, and after originally considering Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina due to their relatively small populations, coastal access, and the Christian nature of the electorate, Burnell says South Carolina has been selected as the target location.

The plan initially calls for at least 12,000 Christians willing to be active in political campaigns to move to the Palmetto State.

"We're not an invading force, we're reinforcements," Burnell tells WorldNetDaily, saying it would be a waste to move to liberal-minded states such as Massachusetts, New York or California where conservative votes would be diluted.

According to the ChristianExodus website, which is slated for a major relaunch next month, "Christians have actively tried to return our entire land to its moral foundation for more than 20 years. We can categorically say that absolutely nothing has been achieved. If you disagree, consider this:

* Abortion continues against the wishes of many states * Children may not pray in our schools * The Bible is not welcome in schools except under strict federal guidelines

* The 10 Commandments remain banned from public display * Sodomy is now legal and celebrated as 'diversity' rather than perversion

* Preaching Christianity will soon be outlawed as 'hate speech' * Gay marriage will be foisted upon us in the very near future

"All these atrocities continue in spite of the fact that we now have the 'right' people in places of power. Indeed, the occupant of the White House is a professing Christian. The U.S. attorney general is believed to be a devout Christian. 'Conservatives' control both Houses of Congress, and Republican presidents appointed seven of the nine Supreme Court justices."

The idea of moving thousands of people to affect the voting in one state is not new. As WorldNetDaily has previously reported, the Free State Project has goals of restoring certain personal liberties and limited government – but without seceding from the union. Last year, a group of 4,500 libertarians decided New Hampshire would be the best state.

Burnell, a math teacher and cell-phone dealer, stresses he's not looking for bloody battles that took place in the American Revolution and the Civil War, but is rather seeking a "political divorce."

"It's got to be different today," he says. "It has to be peaceful, brokered."

But he admits if the federal government decides to use military force to stop the effort, "Then it can't happen."

Already a dozen people are actively working on the project, and some 1,500 by e-mails of support have been received.

If all goes according to plan, Burnell is hoping to have a constitutional convention by 2014, with a president of the new nation – still to be known as South Carolina – elected in 2016, which is also a presidential election year in the U.S.

He says the nation would be founded on Christian principles, and the people writing its constitution would have to hash out details to safeguard it as a Christian republic.

For now, Burnell prefers to shy away from specifics on the precise laws governing the country.

"Independence first, details later," he says.

The Clinton's and their DNC cohorts would love to get Christians all in one state and do a Waco on them.

We need to try some simple civil disobedience.

I think you're right. Unlike many here, I do believe our founding fathers intended separation of church and state. But I think the ACLU wants and has been achieving separation of nation and culture.

I think the Immigration Act of 1965 is a part of the problem, and it was clearly an intentional effort to bring those other than Judeo-Christians into our country. The only way to describe this change in our laws is "laboratory experiment."

In short, our elites didn't and don't know what they are doing. And they have no shame or regret. They were hoping that culture was synonymous with race; it simply isn't. Culture takes generations to assimilate. Culture entails values. Culture is often best transmitted with a catalyst of religion.

So yes, some civil disobedience is overdue. I would also ask those of you involved with churches to insist that they follow traditional teachings of morality. Despite my position that the marriage can and should be considered at a secular level as well as a religious one, with priests, pastors, reverends, and rabbis agreeing to break our civic laws, how can we expect our secular leaders to obey?

If they are serious, I swear my family and I will join them. No question. For now, I'm getting ready. A change is coming.

My father has been saying since 1973 where "America will not survive as a nation as we have known it." I think he's right when you think about the effort here, then factor in the Libertarian Free State Project, and so on. Maybe in a way, it would be better off, at the time of the founding of this nation, States were supposed to be more sovereign then they are now.

I don't think secession would be "running away" (we'd still be on the same soil), but a regrouping and reconstitution of Christian folks into a more effective existence to protect our beliefs/values.

This is silly. If very religious Christians don't want to associate with lefty secularists, there are far less extreme methods than seccession. For example, a Christian developer could form a private religious town.

Federal anti-discrimination laws would probably prevent de jure discrimination against secularists, but if a developer says "This town of 5,000 people is for God-fearing Christians. Our police will enforce strict blue laws, morality codes etc." I highly doubt non-Christians would choose to live in that town.

Once secluded in such a town, would it really matter if the state the town was located in permitted abortion or pornography or homosexual marriage... 50 miles away?? I highly doubt it would impact residents of such a town, or their children, at all.

Orthodox Jews and the Amish have been doing this for decades -- look at towns such as Monsey or Kiryas Joel in New York, for example. There's no reason Christians couldn't do the same.

How to prevent our country from going down the tubes? Frankly, I intend to fight for every square inch of it until we win. God and time are on our side. We know that our opponents are going to destroy themselves. We just need to help them along.

Your going to have to do more than fight at the ballot box. Both the rats and the republicans are importing a population hostile to liberty. You will be outnumbered and have only 3 choices. Give up, seceede, or start shooting.

I disagree. Merely starting a commune or something would not address the problems Christians endure by the federal government.

As a Christian you must take into account ALL the Biblical data, including the scriptural exceptions to governmental-authority-as-supreme.

Okay, so why don't you let me know where the government is forcing you to bow down to the emperor, as long as we are taking things in context. Or to follow another possible reason for rebellion, how is the government forcing you to be homosexual or aborting your babies, etc. ? The only exception to obeying the government is when they attempt to force you to do something sinful.

The cultic MuSlims types are those who would sit idly by as unborn children are murdered.

So your solution is to, what - pick up your toys and go home ?????? Is that what Jesus wants us to do ???

Since Jesus would like us to love the unborn children enough to protect them, then my solution would be to concentrate enough conservative Christians in one location (then secede from the union) so that abortion would be ended in that geographical part of the country where it now is allowed.

Insofar as picking up toys and going home, I'll leave that to the cowards who turn to failed solutions as unborn children are murdered by the millions.

If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. Seceding from the union is only some wacko fantasy, not a solution. Therefore these people are part of the problem. Although they have at least drawn more attention to the issue. I will give them that, but there is only so far this idiotic secession thing is going to go. After that, what then ?

The only exception to obeying the government is when they attempt to force you to do something sinful.

And it is sinful not to protect innocent human life if you can do so (Rahab, Moses' mother, Jesus' parents, etc.). Loving your neighbor (even the unborn ones)is mandatory, and to love them is to protect them. I submit for your consideration a book that specifically deals with the ethics of what we're discussing in painstaking detail: Politically Correct Death by Christian Philosopher Francis Beckwith. (see especially his hypothetical dialogue between Socrates and a law enforcement officer regarding civil disobedience).

As a Christian I can't condone rebellion against authority, as God is the one who establishes the powers that be.

you can't be serious. There are no historical government worthy of rebellion? God sez shut up and take it, (Russians, Poles, Vietnamese, American Colonials, etc...)?

Seceding from the union is only some wacko fantasy, not a solution.

The wacko fantasy is to belief that everything will get better in our government as millions of babies are murdered, and to think of these millions of murders as not enough reason to divorce our government as the colonists had.

there is only so far this idiotic secession thing is going to go.

Funny. That's exactly what was said about those who wanted a Declaration of Independence in 1776.
