So we can all pitch in for his ticket to Chechnya, where he can learn a great deal, but probably not come home with that education.

Mr. Berg must not read much. Islamic wahhabis usually choose the kindest and most vulnerable people to kidnap and kill. The chechens went after Red Cross and aid workers who were actually sympathetic to their cause.

In fact chechens took and killed quite a few people just like Nick Berg, people who thought they would go and help rebuild a country.

I'll pitch in, especially if he takes Al Gorjeera with him.

Did you know that he quit the Boy Scouts of America because they wanted to teach him to fire a handgun?

Okay, I gave up reading this tripe after reaching this part.. I don't remember THAT merit badge.. Just riflery. But if you're bashing Bush, why not the gun industry as well? And the Boy Scouts?

Whatever sympathy this man may have gotten has been pissed away with his usefull idiot comments. It is ironic that he gives aid and comfort to the savages that slaughtered his son. Sad really.

No doubt he raised his son like he thinks we should deal with evil. Didn't discipline him or teach him to set limits, but did a lot of listening to him.
Liberal parents are clueless.

I wonder if his father's beliefs about some innate goodness in all people or the non-existence of real evil in this world isn't what actually contributed most to the horrid death Nick suffered.

Michael Berg doesn't believe in an innate goodness in "all" people. He thinks that Republicans are vile, horrendous, violent, greedy, sadistic people. Republicans seem to be the only persons who Mr. Berg sees absolute negativity in.

Excelent point! Poor Nick Berg must be rolling in his grave at his father's idiocy... well his body must be rolling. His head, OTOH, is on a spike somewhere in Islamoland.

What makes me so seriously ill when I read this hypocritical BS is how these people cursed my children in a public protest of our bombing of Serbia.

I just want to vomit when I read this crap about peace and being nice. Where in the heck were all these peacelovers when we bombed Serbia? Nowhere to be found.

I could perhaps at least respect them a tad if they were the least bit consistent.

What was done to Serbia was a frikkin' crime... all for the sake of Clinton's peni$, and these same "pacifist" maggots just witewashed it for him.

Disgusting!

Oh that's right. Thanks for correcting me. The islamic wahhabis are just misguided, we republicans are the truly evil ones. You have to wonder where they come up with this kind of thinking??? I just am constantly amazed.

Liberal support for the wahhabis, which is what is now known to be what the Serbs were fighting off, is consistent at least.

You should only hear some of the islamics who call in to the conservative radio shows here. What they say about Jews is chilling.

This area, the Pacific Northwest, is a virtual nest of wahabi wannabes. Which is why I keep reminding myself to get my older kids into some regular target practise.....

"I am sure, knowing my son, that somewhere during their association with him these men became aware of what an extraordinary man my son was. I take comfort in the fact that when they did the awful thing they did, they weren't quite as into it as they might have been."

This man must be on some very heavy duty meds. The pictures I looked at didn't seem to show that they weren't quite as into it as they might have been.

The pictures showed the tortureous death of his son, yet he still forgives them. Very Christian of him, he would've made good lion meat in the Roman era. Thankfully, those days are over, or at least as long as George Bush is around they are.

but he is doing more dishonor to his son's legacy by engaging in this rant

Do you honestly think he cares? He is a "true believer" They have no problem with sacrificing their kids.

I am sure his grief is nearly overwhelming. Which is why I have waited this long before posting anything about what he says. But this one is over the top.

He has now entered the Rachel-Corrie-parental-madhouse of using the death of your own child to advance your own politics. And there is no excuse for dishonoring your own child in this way.

Gore to Dubya: Condemn Limbaugh (transcript of Rush Limbaugh's response)

Rush: They did nothing serious to stop bin Laden. They did nothing serious to fight terrorism.

They degraded our military. They slashed our troop levels, undermined our intelligence services. Today calls for civil rights for terrorists in his speech while opposing the Patriot Act which helps us find and stop terrorist cells right here in our country, and Gore has said nothing about how he would fight this evil because he's obsessed with hatred not for the enemy but for George W. Bush -- and that's what identifies MoveOn.org. That's what identifies most of the fringe, radical left in this country.

They actually think Bush is a greater threat to the people of this world and this country than any thug dictator, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong ll, anybody. They think Bush poses a greater threat, and as misguided as that is, this is what animates them. It is what motivates them and inspires them.

The politics of victimhood eventually make fools who are so morally equivilent and so used to blaming others instead of looking in the mirror, that they are incapable of rational thought.

Letters on a father's grief

Father's naiveté appalls
I don't think any of us can put ourselves fully into the shoes of Nicholas Berg's father, nor would we want to imagine what it would be like to see one of our children killed in such a horrendous way. However, in his May 26 Outlook article ["Berg's dad: Why I blame Bush for son's death,"] Michael Berg's outrage at the Bush administration is misplaced, and his view appallingly naive — not only of his son's captors, but of the entire region in which our brave soldiers are deployed.

Berg's killers did not have a clue as to the kind of man he was, nor did they care. They were so inflamed with their own purpose that they could not see beyond the hate they feel toward the Western world.

Berg clearly does not understand the situation in Iraq. Even after witnessing the acts of 9/11 and his son's barbaric death, it is not enough for him to be simply "fed up" with war in general. No reasonable person wants to be at war — but we all feel it is necessary in order to stabilize the region. Admittedly, mistakes have been made (and can be expected) because wars are fought by men.

Kathryn J. Suerth, Houston

Reasons to defend U.S.
I hope Michael Berg received some comfort from his efforts to eulogize his son at the expense of the president. But I don't understand how he can say his son's killers recognized the humanity of Nicholas Berg at his death. He gives them too much credit.

These men are not worthy of the misapplication of any compassion whatsoever.

The reason George Bush sent soldiers is that terrorists see more purpose in a demonstration of agony than through any appeal to reason. These men would send children wired with explosives among Boy Scouts to dismember more bodies in order to foment the fears of peace-loving people.

Sorrow speaks with a language of its own, but the foreign policy of the United States must remain proactive in order to keep the confrontation with criminals away from our shores.

Capitulation is a victory for injustice. The terrorists' brutality should incite America to stand firm and not give in to their methods at advancing their misguided ideology. It is only among freedom-loving people that Berg's grief can be shared at the expense of the leadership's political reputation.

Thank you for reminding us all of that important reason to defend this great and prosperous land.

Glen Risley, Houston

What extremists want
I feel the pain [Nicholas] Berg's dad, Michael, has endured for the loss of his son. But I am dismayed at his statements regarding George W. Bush and Nicholas' death. The only people Michael Berg can blame are the murderers — not Bush.

Berg says we should stop labeling people as enemies and start listening to them. But what would he do when the extremists say our way of life should be destroyed and the world made an Islamic state?

This is our enemy. They do not want us to listen — they want to destroy everything we represent.

Berg says we should honor and respect every human being's need to live free. America is the inspiration for this ideal, but our enemies only want to destroy it.

These extremists do not want freedom and do not respect life.

Steven Toman, Spring

Her prayer is continuing
I read Michael Berg's Outlook article with great sadness. Thank you for printing it.

Recently I was held up in traffic while [Vice President Dick] Cheney's motorcade sped down Memorial Drive. At the time, I [thought] he was not brave enough to travel the streets of Houston by himself, much less go to war — and, yet, he does not hesitate in sending our young men and women to die in Iraq without adequate protection by way of training or funding.

Bravo to Berg. Democracy has become the opiate of the masses for this generation.

Pushing it on others has been the justification of many evil acts. To make our young men and women experience the horrors of war in order to force our values onto others is a Holocaust of another kind. I continue to pray for a peaceful solution to the world's problems.

Donna P. Kohlhausen,
Houston
