U.S. manufacturing chugged to a full year of expansion in May, pushing factory hiring to its highest in 31 years, a survey released on Tuesday showed.

No offence, but the mantras people recite make me sick.

I learned only ONE CAD software from school for my degree. I now know 5. I went back to school 4 times to learn new skills.

I am enrolled for a 2nd degree to make myself more employable, and have been since last September on a FAFSA grant, thats how broke I was, i as a white male qualified for a grant.

I dont have money to move, I live in the most expensive part of the country, in the cheapest town, in the cheapest apartment, dont have cable, have all the calling plans in the world to save money, drive an 18 year old car, am only $9K in debt, but only make $346 a week collecting unemployment.

Adding up my bills, i need over $16 an hour to break even...if I was even to start! Only with repeated unemployment in the last 3 years, I am way behind, plus surgery last year, I owe much more to the hospital that I intend to rely on the lawsuit to pay for.

Plus I am being sued for the LIEberman Freep and need to hold a fundraiser soon to help pay for the legal fees for that, and that is over $12K after depositions.

Peole who know CADKEY, AUTOCAD, PRO/E and Solidworks but DONT have a BS dont find work right now.

I haven't got the money to take the courses for the two remaining softwares that are being advertised for, and I hope to have the state WIA program pay for classes in UNIGRAPHICS soon.

I have petitioned the Congress to allow veterans like me who have the Expeditionary Medal to receive Veterans benefits equal to Vietnam Era vets bennies, because MANY of the Vietnam Vets who get bennies NEVER WENT ANYWHERE, but I did, you have to actually be deployed in an area of conflict to get the Expeditionary Medal, only for my time period, i get nothing. Plus, they ended my Vietnam Era GI BILL 3 years early on me! So, I never got to take full part in the program because Congress cut off funding back in 1988-1989

$520 rent mnth (CHEAPEST in the area, not a joke)
100 Phone mnth ( Only luxery is DSL, Modem is only 15 a month cheaper)
65 electricity (avg yr) mnth (Sometimes 125 a month in December)
270 Gas (price increase) mnth , only to rise in the coming months
300 Mnth food, that is eating good, too.

not included is my tithe for church, coffee, newspapers to look for work, nor is insurance for self, about $12 a wwk, or car, $500 a yr

Nor is clothes or undewear, shoes, car parts

Tell me what you end up with, then divide by 52.

I want to see you manage up here.

THEN, loan me the money to move to whereit is cheaper.

An AS with 5 CADlanguages and 6 years experience as a designer/Draftsman, 3 years as a Project Engineer...makes me more of an engineer than a lot of BS 20-somethings that are getting hired, dont ya think?

Besides, too many people actually think they can go back and workl as a mechanic after they work as an engineer...all I keep hearing is YOULL LEAVE ONCE THE ECONOMY PICKS UP!

I don't know anything about mantras, just curious why a young, educated person, with no mention of any physical limitations, hadn't found some source of employment for the past 3 to 5 years. I must admit I know nothing about your profession, however, it appears you've made some effort to stay viable in your field but to no avail. At least not in your area. At the risk of repeating a mantra, it seems you do have options, albeit some may not be especially palatable but they don't have to be permanent either, just a means to an end.

I have diversified so much, no one wants me.

I have advanced so far, I am not allowed to go backward! They all tell me I will leave once the economy gets better, and I am so sick of hearing it!

I would take the $15 an hour jobs if they were perms and declare chapter 7 just to have some stability!

That's how bad it is here, and it is the talk of everyone at the memorial day parties, how the whole state seems to be outsourced. Even the place where I do drawings on the side outsources to China! they have to, all their competitors do, and it is the only way to offer reduced prices! at 10% of an American company quote!

Debt is silly to analyze without examining the person holding the notes ability to pay it. For instance, if I learned that I was 1.5 million in debt, I would despair. If Bill Gates learned he was 1.5 million in debt, he would hardly raise an eyebrow. So how does one measure the capacity for the US government to pay its debt? Easy, one asks the market to set a price on that debt and purchase it. Right now, the market thinks US debt is very manageable, does it not?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your sarcasm. Not to put too fine a point on it but, he has invested time and effort in skills that may or may not be marketable in his area. If they aren't marketable in CT he is simply going to have to learn new skills or relocate to where he can earn a living with those skills. Most of us are resistent to change but clearly what he has been doing isn't working for him. He can stay where he is in anticipation of better days but apparently that hasn't happened for at least 3 years or more. In any realistic assessment of the situation "change" has to be on the table. A change of profession or location or going into business for himself.

When I graduated college in 1996 I had $18 in my checking account and $25 in savings. I rented a U-Haul with my Visa card and moved from Buffalo NY to Raleigh NC.

I had spent my spring break in Raleigh securing a place to live and a job. I worked for TGIFridays throughout college as a line cook and was able to obtain employment at a Fridays in Raleigh for when I moved. Making a whopping $8.50 an hour. I worked my 40 hours and would put in OT when it was available. My girlfriend (now wife) came with me and brought $2,000 she had saved over the past YEAR since she graduated a year before me, and $30,000 in student loan debt, along with a beater station wagon that died 2 weeks after our arrival in Raleigh. The one thing she didn't bring with her was a job! Needing money and fast she took a low paying clerical type job at a prison!

2 months after moving Hurrican Fran ripped through, knocking out electricity for a week, spoiling everything in the fridge and freezer leaving us with no food and no money to replace it. Luckily, the same thing was happening to everyone else in the apartment complex so there was a constant BBQ (Hey southerners, it is both a noun and a verb!) going on to at least use what food could be salvaged. Everyone grilled what they could and we all shared. Other than that, we might not have eaten much of anything that week.

Lucky for us, the month previous a tornado in Hurricane Bertha only took out a tree 10 feet infront of our door and the roof off the building next to us and not the other way around.

We were dirt poor, and for no short period of time. But we have continued to improve our situation over the years through hard work, dedication, networking, saving, and avoiding the frivilous.

My wife has steadily moved up the ladder in her company, and I after 6 years in the mortgage business am on my own and doing pretty well. And my love of magic is paying dividends with my starting a career in magic instead of just doing it for fun with family and friends.
