After months of campaigning, Democrat Stephanie Herseth is being named the winner in the race for South Dakota's lone U.S. House seat.

Hours after the polls closed, the Associated Press called the race. The tally was extremely tight, with Herseth leading over her opponent, Republican Larry Diedrich, by less than 3,000 votes.

If Herseth is indeed the final victor in the race, she will be the first woman Democrat from South Dakota to take a seat in the U.S. Congress. She will fill the vacancy left by Bill Janklow when he resigned in January.

Herseth and Diedrich will face each other again in the November general election, running for a full term.

just remember that Jim Talent beat Widder Carnahan after she had been in office serving her husband's term after an appointment. I would hope the Pubbies will turn out better in November. The GOP should shut Herseth out till then...to help the SD voters see the logic of staying with the party in power in the House...

Good news is that Diedrich did well, he'll be able to get well funded, and he'll have Bush helping him in November.

Yup. Herseth best not get too settled into her comfy Washington digs just yet.

I don't know anything about South Dakota, but in general, if your Congressman kills a guy, the candidate from the other party is going to get a sizable boost by default. If anything, she should be embarrassed she only won by 2 points.

Oh, I see that Herseth is a legacy, and a lawyer to boot.

Herseth is a 33-year-old Georgetown-educated lawyer and a member of one of South Dakota's most distinguished political families.

(Yanked from CNN.com)

I guess that's why she squeaked by, good old-fashioned nepotism (both from family and the legal profession).

I agree. Zogby is totally worthless. He's been the absurd outlier one too many times now AFAIC..

These SD elections always seem to end up close -- so close that the dead Indian vote always seems to tip it in the Dims favor. Hopefully, we'll take that seat back in November and wipe Dashole out with her.

A government of the lawyers, by the lawyers and for the lawyers.

Not a surprise. Though Bush is not in trouble in SD, he is in potential peril nationwide, and this House race reflects that situation in my opinion. The GOP just can't get its act together in the Dakotas, not to say that this candidate was particularly weak or a bad choice to make the race. People in SD do have a fondness for Republican presidents and Democrats in Congress. Also the SD voters were probably punishing the GOP for the sins of Janklow. I would expect an even larger Herseth win in November with no Bush "coattails" for either Diederich or Thune. Big winner: Daschle.

This is the second Republican congressional seat that had to be filled by special election this year, the second one in a state that Bush carried in 2000, and the second one that the Democrats have won. It doesn't look like the Republican base is enthusiastic enough to turn out when needed.
