as an IT guy I can say, in an office situation, always stay on the good side of the IT people.
This is a corollary to rule #1 of offices, which is stay on the good side of the office manager.

I'm not IT anymore, but having done it in a past life gives me a little in with the IT department here. They know I know how hard they bust ass in an utterly thankless job, and I make sure they know I appreciate them doing it so I don't have to.
And when they're passing out nice fast PCs and huge new monitors, strict seniority isn't always observed. It pays to be nice. :)

Agree with your analysis BUT "Always stay on the good side of the boss' secretary" is the number one rule as it is the one you must apply when you first start work - any whwere. The secretary always knows what is happening before it happens and who is in what status. Wonder if he PO'd her / him first?
