Sydney - Australia's conservative government hit out at the national broadcaster on Thursday for portraying a lesbian couple on a popular television show for pre-school children.
The show Play School aired on Monday by the publicly-funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) showed a story about a girl going to a fair with her two mothers.
"I'm Brenna. That's me in the blue. My mums are taking me and my friend Meryn to an amusement park," the little girl says over images of her two mothers smiling and waving.
The show aired just days after Prime Minister John Howard - who faces elections later this year - announced legislation that would outlaw gay marriages and prevent homosexual couples from adopting children from abroad.
The federal minister for children's affairs, Larry Anthony, accused the ABC of promoting the views of a minority in Australia with the Play School episode.
"As a parent I am concerned that the ABC are putting on these types of programmes," he said.
"When it comes to my children, when I want to explain about same-sex couples, it should be up to parents, it should be up to me, not the Australian broadcaster.
"I think it's important for those programme producers to ensure that they are not just responding to minorities," he said.
"There is a responsibility to parents and I don't think it's appropriate."

Is there any point to reacting to this?
The culture war is over, and we have lost. The next generation will have to deal with all the pathologies of the idea that "homosexuality is inherent to humankind."
This makes me glad that I don't have children. The Left has won and they have sacrificed all right thinking on the altar of PC.
God help all of you who have kids or grandkids. I will say a prayr toniht especially for you.
It is most assuridly NOT over. Only such French attitudes will give the left what they want. This will be pushed harder and harder. The courts in Mass may have surrendered due to one ACLU Judge but that does not mean the legislatures have. The left has to go the undecomcratic road into the courts, because they can't win.
The 11th Federal DCA upholding of adoption prohibition for homosexuals is far more significant. Remember homosexuals are only about sex and pushing their private sex life into public.
You know that and I know that, but they have won. Witness Massachussetes. It's over. Mark my words. The Chinese and Islamists will be the next wars. The Liberals in the soon-to-be-ex-free USA (25 years if we're lucky) will be remembered as the support system to the foundation of IslamUSA.
It will be a wierd, yet satisfying conflict. PC will promote Homosexualism as a valid "lifestyle" and Islam as a valid "theology." When those who suggest "morality" and "Christ" as a model are removed as "intolerant" we will see the TRUE clash of cultures.
You and I both know that the Islamists will win, because the Homos will continue to chant the mantra of "all theologies are OK" while the Muslims literally place knifes in their sides.
My only desire is to outlast the Muslims and to inhibit the selg-haters. But it doesn't look good.
I love australia... i think they are our only true ally along with Britain.
The next battle in mass will be for the 2006 referendum to prohibit marriage outside of one man and one woman. It never ends, even when its over. The hedonistic lifestyles will always endevor to foist themselves. Whether its homosexuals or some other fetish group. This judge will eventually die of old age or retire, legislators will come and go. The country is getting older and the largest growing segment, the hispanic group, is far more traditional marriage and not accepting of the homosexual lifestyle choice.
the real key is going to be to go after the far leftist groups like the ABA or the APA. Perhaps they should have their tax status removed as the next attack.
