A man crying "God is great" stabbed a Jewish teenager in the chest on Friday, seriously injuring the victim, officials said. It was the second violent attack in a week on a young Jewish man.
The 17-year-old victim, who was not identified by name, was attacked about 4 p.m. as he left a Yeshiva in Epinay-sur-Seine, north of Paris in the rough Seine-Saint-Denis district, officials of the local prefecture said.
The victim was transferred to a hospital, and the attacker fled the scene. Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin visited the site where the attack occurred.
Witnesses said a man shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) then plunged a knife into the young man before fleeing. The attacker was of North African or Pakistani origin, according to LCI television.
The life of the victim was not in danger, said Gilles Taieb, a spokesman for the Jewish Consistoire, which directs Jewish religious life.
Last Sunday, the 17-year-old son of a rabbi was set upon by a group of young men as he prepared to enter his home in suburban Boulogne-Billancourt. The group of young hit the son of rabbi Victor Bellahcem, proffering anti-Semitic insults and trying to steal his scooter.
The Sunday attack came hours after a fire was set in front of the Strasbourg home of the Muslim representative of the eastern region of Alsace, Aziz el Alaouani. Racist and Nazi graffiti was scrawled on the walls of his home.
President Jacques Chirac condemned the latest attack "with the greatest firmness," saying the aggression was "unworthy of the values of France."
"Tolerance is the cement of our national community," a statement issued by the presidential office said.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin denounced the attack, saying he shares "the legitimate indignation of the Jews of France against this barbarous act which touches our entire national community."
Anti-Semitic attacks have been on the rise in France despite a series of measures put in place to counter them. However, physical assaults are less common than attacks on Jewish sites, from synagogues to schools, and the desecration of Jewish cemeteries.
The Interior Ministry has reported 67 anti-Semitic acts in the first quarter of 2004, a 60-percent increase from the same period a year earlier.
Young Muslims have been blamed for many of the attacks which, over the past few years, have coincided with rising tension in the Middle East.
However, Muslims have also been victims of racist attacks. In March, an arson fire damaged a mosque and destroyed a Muslim prayer hall in Annecy, in southeast France.
The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France, an umbrella group, asked that the attacker be found "as quickly as possible" and that his punishment be "exemplary."
It called on all French to unite against the rise in anti-Semitism "which endangers the foundations of our country."
Obviously the perp was a renegade Mennonite.
Somebody needs to explain to the Europeans that all pacts with the devil end the same way.

Don't worry folks. The State Department and the INS are busy issuing plenty of Allah Akbar visas. Our highways and biways will be teeming with Religion of Peace people as soon as is bureaucratically possible.

I expect that the French will show the same stoic courage they have always shown in the face of attacks against their Jewish citizens. They will refuse to overeact; they will keep all in perspective ... this child was only a Jew.
"Allahu Akbar" does NOT MEAN God is great. Allah is a pagan moon rock god that has nothing whatsoever to do with the god of the bible.
