Gore says Miami Mayor Penelas betrayed Democrats

Former Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore delivered a harsh message to Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, three months before he faces a U.S. Senate primary.

BY BETH REINHARD

breinhard@herald.com

Former Vice President Al Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election by 537 votes in Florida, on Saturday called Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas ``the single most treacherous and dishonest person I dealt with during the campaign anywhere in America.''

The statement was e-mailed by a Gore spokesman in response to a Herald inquiry about Penelas's role in the 2000 campaign. Gore supporters say the vice president had counted on Penelas for a late boost in the Hispanic community, and the mayor did not come through.

The harsh remarks come just three months before Penelas faces a Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate. Gore's reproach could seriously damage the mayor's bid to succeed Sen. Bob Graham, since party loyalists tend to dominate turnout in a primary.

In a telephone interview Saturday evening, Penelas defended himself, saying he was ``by Gore's side from the very beginning.''

''Al Gore has a right to be upset about the election, but had he won his home state of Tennessee or West Virginia, we wouldn't be here,'' Penelas said. ``He also owes an explanation as to why he waited until the middle of October to engage in Florida.''

He said Gore has declined to return his phone calls to discuss the 2000 campaign.

and returning a child to be Castro's photo-op is a good thing??? When his family in the US loved him?

Kidnapping him with military force, a good thing???

That was Reno's Magnum Opus to her Prelude at Waco.

I think the important thing to remember--whatever you think of the Elian mess--we can all thank the little boy, as it was he who kept Gore from being elected.

Living in South Florida, I went to the Gonzales home while it was surounded and cordoned off by the police. I met Elian's uncle and prayed with him. His hands were calloused from his daily regimen of hard work in an auto repair shop. I am a protestant and he is Roman Catholic. We both had a common point of agreement that the Island Prison of atheistic communist Cuba is no place for a little boy to have to grow up.

Elian's mother died trying to bring her son to Miami to his uncles and to freedom, when the raft she was floating on fell apart. In the Island Prison, she was raising Elian without the help of the boy's father who never married her and had little involvement in the boy life. No written will could have stated any more clearly whom she intended to have custody of the boy in the event of her demise. She and the father had been in contact with the uncle's in Miami planning the escape to freedom.

To say that Elian was sent back to Cuba because of parental rights is a wretched joke perpetrated upon Elian, for in Cuba there are no parental rights. The communist State literaly owns all the children.

When Clinton, Reno and all their jack-booted thugs broke the door down without a proper warrant, pepper sprayed its peaceful, law abiding occupants and kidnapped little Elian Gonzales back to the Island Prison, they did America a great favor in an ironic way: it cost Al Gore the presidency and saved the USA.

God Bless little Elian who may never know freedom again. He was a brave little boy betrayed by vicious liberals who stole his freedom. He is a ward of the state, is not in the home of his father who now has little interaction with the son with whom he was never truly re-united.

The more Gore uses the word "betrayed," the sooner it will come around to point at him. The tactic of taking what is true of you and accuse your adversary of it are over, thanks to the scrutiny of FR, Rush, Hannity, Bob Grant, Steve Malzberg, etcetera and so on.....

Excellent portrayal, the house was treated as a near shrine for the longest time,I still can't get over the pony-tailed male that was on the plane to take Elian back to Cuba--a high-ranking member of the Methodist Church--Hitlary is Methodist, I was but am not quite sure now.

"I think the important thing to remember--whatever you think of the Elian mess--we can all thank the little boy, as it was he who kept Gore from being elected."

This is absolutely true. God works in mysterious ways.
If Clinton/Gore had stood up for Elian, Gore would have gained enough votes in Florida to avoid any doubt.

But then, if Algore had stood up for Elian he wouldn't have been Algore, would he? Sad for Elian, but the poetic justice is delicious.

I too, BTW, believe the election of W was the "angel riding the whirlwind and directing the storm."
