Time For A Second Mount Rushmore Has Arrived
self

Posted on 06/06/2004 9:50:14 AM PDT by paul in cape

Now that President Reagan has moved on to his higher calling, I think it's time to revisit the commissioning of a second Mount Rushmore: I'll call it SPIRIT OF FREEDOM. The second half of the 20th Century saw 3 leaders who, although one may disagree with a policy or two, allowed America to rise above pettiness and strive for greatness. My list would include Franklin Roosevelt, for guiding the nation through the Depression and WWII, John Kennedy, for renewing the spirit of mission and can-do-ism, and Ronald Reagan, who won the cold war without firing a shot, and pulling America up on his back and out of the malaise of Carterism, and infecting most Americans with a renewed sense of optimism.

Now that the Old Man In The Mountain fell last year in New Hampshire, perhaps an area in NH can be found for a fitting memorial.

God Bless you, Mr. President.

Is there any chunk of rock good for a new monument near the origional?

Would save agony to have the close together, if possible...

FDR???? He was one of the worst presidents we had. His socialistic policies were a disaster. He is the leader of the nanny state movement. At Yalta conference Russias miltary was totally destroyed we could've marched to Moscow and took control, instead FDR gave them half of Europe culminating in 50 years of cold war. FDR was a great American idiot!!!!!

"...infecting most Americans with a renewed sense of optimism>"

Quite a task in this day of pessimism and age denial.

Agree with R.R. but not your other two choices.

I agree, FDR was the original American Socialist. He should have no part of a Reagan memorial.

Sorry but Kennedy does not belong on the list, FDR okay. Why not just start the fund raising with the two I am sure GWB will earn a place by the time the other two are half way done. Remember it will take decades before you can start carving.

No. The original was, in fact, supposed to have a scroll down the right side with several selected quotations on it, and they ditched that due to cost and to instability of the rock formation. There is no usable space there that won't cause Rushmore to collapse.

Kennedy wasn't President long enough to make much of a mark, except for getting assasinated, IMHO, and NOT Roosevelt, please.....the LIBS/Clinton's would just LOVE that liberal being annointed. Reagan needs a monument ALL his own. I believe he's one in a million.

With a light weight Kenedy and communist F.D. Roosevelt along side a real man and conservative patriot of President Ronald Reagan's stature, the mountain would colaps in shame. Let us put President Reagans bust on its own mountain.

Find someone of Borglum's skill and I pledge $5,000.00 to the project.

Wasn't the original also supposed to include full bodies?

Whatever the location, it would have to be granite or a similar type stone. Sedimentary rock, such as sandstone, would crumble too easily

I'm with you if it can be privately funded and built by American citizens.

Eisenhower and Truman would be better choices than Kennedy and Roosevelt -- though you can hardly deny a 4-term (didn't get near finishing the last one) President who led (sometimes shakily, needing a little backbone from Churchill often) through WWII.

Maybe it should be Reagan, Churchill, Thatcher and Ike on the next mountain!

FDR, for prolonging the Depression by maintaining the high tariffs he denounced in 1932, and by raising the income tax to astronomical heights, and for destroying thousands of PRIVATE insurance cooperatives by preempting them with Soshcurity and welfare, for beginning the destruction of the Black family through welfare, and for getting us into the war in Europe by provoking the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. JFK for record-setting levels of adultery and drug use in the White House.

Swap Truman for Kennedy. I have problems with FDR, but you'd probably have to include him in order to get a deal done.
