Actor Cruise opens detox centre (For NY Rescue Workers exposed to toxic material during 9/11)

Actor Tom Cruise has opened a detox centre in New York for rescue workers exposed to toxic material during the 11 September attacks on the US in 2001.

The centre, based in Long Island, New York, is the second detox centre to be funded by the 41-year-old movie star.

In March, he raised $1.2m (£666,000) towards treatment for workers who sifted through tonnes of debris.

"It's been almost three years since the attacks, and thousands are still suffering," he said.

"That's unacceptable to me, to these heroes, and to their families," Cruise said during the inauguration on Wednesday.

Alternative treatment

Ailments suffered by the rescue workers have been dubbed "9/11 syndrome".

The first centre, which was opened in Manhattan in 2002, was partly funded by L Ron Hubbard's Church of Scientology, of which Cruise is a member.

The alternative treatment, outlined in Hubbard's book Clear Body, Clear Mind, uses "exercise, sauna sweat-out, vitamins and minerals" to help rescue workers cleanse their bodies of toxic materials.

The first centre is said to have treated more than 400 rescue workers so far.

Cruise's sister and spokeswoman Lee Anne DeVette said he "will open several more of the facilities through the rest of the year".

"It's something he cares a great deal about and it helps so much."

Cruise, who most recently starred in the historical epic The Last Samurai, is about to start work on the third Mission: Impossible film, in which he will star and co-produce.

A better title would be "Scientologist opens new recruiting center".

If they are going to use this to recruit fresh Scientologists, they are not doing these people a favor.

Hmm, sounds like a spa. How much evidence do you think they require to prove you were a rescue worker? Mr. Cruise, I have this cough, and I'm losing weight!

Cruise is such a smarmy little creep.

I would have to be really toxic to consider going there.

Why not give him credit for doing a good thing? We'd probably be praising this if a conservative did it.

exercise, sauna sweat-out, vitamins and minerals

Can't hurt ... I could use some of that myself!

If a conservative put forward a treatment center based on quack therapies recommended by a charlatan, I'd be denouncing it.

If Cruise wants to help people who think their health has been negatively impacted, he should offer to pay for their visits to qualified medical personnel.

I'm in no position to comment on whether the therapies are effective or "quack" remedies as you claim, or whether the centers are a ruse to convert people to Scientology. But Muslims make the same claim about Christian medical missionaries, i.e., that their ultimate goal is religious conversion rather than simply providing medical care.

Look very closely - the Church of Scientology has Tom Cruise tied up like a puppet on a string.

The city's chief medical officer has long since stated that this "detox" treatment is bunk, but that hasn't stopped Schumer, Maloney and city council member Lopez from saddling up with Cruise.

The reason these people are sick is that the toxins and their metabolites are disrupting cellular activity at the target sites. Opening sweat glands (which only regulates fluid balance and body temperature) and shotgunning vitamins (which only addresses vitamin deficiencies) won't cure that sort of thing.

This is pure gobbledygook pseudoscience nonsense. You might feel better after a session in a spa, but it won't do a blessed thing for removing toxins.

Scientology has identified the problem, and scientology will cure the problem. Nothing else would have identified the problem, and of course nothing else could cure the problem.
