WASHINGTON - An Australian held at the Navy's prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will face a military tribunal for allegedly training and fighting alongside members of al-Qaida in Afghanistan (news - web sites), the Pentagon (news - web sites) announced Thursday.

Prime Minister John Howard today urged businesses to work hard to protect their infrastructure from terrorist attacks, warning that another Madrid-style bombing was likely somewhere around the world in coming months. Mr Howard told senior officers from 40 of Australia's biggest companies, including Telstra, Qantas, oil companies and banks, that the price of protection from terror attacks was a cost that had to be factored into operating plans.

The September 11 attacks on the US had cost the American economy $US75 billion ($109.35 billion) since 2001, he said at the meeting in Parliament House.

"There is a cost for all of us," Mr Howard said.

"We live in a world now where taking measures to improve security and fight terrorism is a cost of doing business.

"But overall the price, what we do pay in those economic terms, has to be put against the extraordinarily high level of disruption and dislocation to our economy, as well as to our way of life, let alone of course the cost in loss of life that might occur if a terrorist attack were to take place in this country."

Mr Howard said he was often asked if a terrorist attack was likely in Australia.

"I say God forbid it should occur, but I can't give any guarantees that it won't happen in this country and any nation ... that believes it's immune, in some way is going to slip through the net, going to go by unnoticed, is frankly deluding itself," he said.

Any weakness or equivocation on the part of the government would only encourage terrorists, he said.

"We've seen that sadly demonstrated over the past few months, we saw it demonstrated in relation to the events in Spain and we will see it demonstrated, I'm sorry to say, in the months ahead," Mr Howard said.

The meeting will continue behind closed doors today.

I suspect there are many forces impacting Homeland Security, including THE PUPPET MASTERS.

Ridge is supposedly and earnest, honest, genuine Christian trying to do the honorable right thing.

Given all the givens of current daily international life, that has to be a difficult job without dealing with the entrenched traitors within. With them . . . . GOD HELP THE MAN!!!

It seems to me, that if it's toooo politically sensitive to overtly inform the public, then they should evolve a way to get the word out through various sort of devious net ways but ways which would have some credibility from some sort of authoritative voice. Not sure how to go about that.

Maybe Homeland Security needs to have a tight connection with Fox news such that serious but sensitive things could be leaked routinely to Fox who'd put them out either on the net or on the air.

It's a hard question. Not sure how to solve it.

Story on the four Marines we weere discussing yesterday.......(operating without backup)

They were so effective in Fallujah in April, insurgents put a bounty on their heads.

Otey and three other Marine snipers - including Cpl. Tommy Parker, 21, of Cleburne, Ark., and Lance Cpl. Pedro Contreras, 27, of Harris, Tex. - were found shot to death Monday in a walled compound.

It was unclear how the crack unit met its end, but the four were operating without nearby backup in Ramadi, a center of unrest in the Sunni Triangle about 20 miles west of Baghdad.

When they failed to make radio checks, a reaction force raided the town and found their bodies. Video given to Associated Press TV News showed the Marines sprawled in a courtyard and stripped of body armor.

Scout Snipers operate in teams of two each, consisting of a primary sniper and his spotter who also acts as a security element. So this is two teams. Who knows if they were moving and operating together. But I have no doubt that they were specifically targeted. Our snipers have been reaping a deadly harvest sending Jihadists to meet Allah and they have got to be infuriated. God Bless and keep the sniper teams!

Smarter minds than mind have tried to solve this and still dont have an answer. BTW you need to read The Camp Of The Saints. It is pretty much the same dilemma they just aren't trying to kill us.

I would love to see some problem solving on this. All the work on this thread and still no clear answer as what to do. Usually (and I use that loosely) I have some sort of answerer before I spout off but I am guilty on this one myself.
