Tens and tens of thousands of people have surged to the Capitol tonight, to pay their respects to President Reagan. The crowd has surged beyond all planned capacity, almost double what the authorities had planned for.
As of 11:45pm, the estimated wait time (given by Park Police officers on the scene) to get into the Rotunda is eight to eleven hours, meaning that those who are getting in line now have no chance of making it into the Rotunda before the 7am cut-off time for viewing.
The line begins at the west end (7th Street) of the National Air & Space Museum, and is snaking up and down the three-block length of the National Mall alongside the Museum; at least eight (8) times.
Those lines, in turn feed into the next block of similarly structured lines between 3rd and 4th Streets.
That segment, in turn feeds into yet another area at the Capitol Reflecting Pool! People are still getting in line at this time (11:53pm).
There are people from all cross-sections of society in line. Most families have left their young children at home, however.
The weather is perfect for an all night vigil.
Kristinn says he will call in later in the night with further updates.
As Bob Dole said earlier today, "Once again, Ronald Reagan has been underestimated."
Kristinn is in line with Jim Parmelee from Northern VA GOP, and he says people are still getting in line.
Bless him. I am so pleased to see the outpouring of respect.
way to go Kristinn!
Praising God for this outpouring of love being shown for President Reagan. May his beloved Nancy draw strength and some small measure of comfort in knowing how much the people of this nation respected, admired, and adored this remarkable man.
Well said!
And for every additional mourner, a liberal's head explodes.
So what time do they have to cut off the line to have everybody out in time for the services? It looks like they'll have to soon if those estimates are correct.
The dimocrats don't know how they can rewrite history now. There are entirely too many witnesses!

Inasmuch as Reagan was/is (in a sense) a beacon and light, it would appear appropriate to have this long line as a torchlight procession.
8-11 hours .. WOW!!
Sorry. I reread the article. Disregard.

During the show (6pm - 9pm) Chris was saying then that more and more people were streaming into the line.
I just tuned in to CSPAN, and it seems like the viewing is moving faster than before, but they still could fit double as many people through if they would let them in at a faster pace. Its pretty much still just a single-file line on either side, when they could easily pull back the outer ropes and move 2 or 3 rows through on each side. I wonder if there is a limit to the security screening offscreen, or if they are just letting them through in such limited numbers for decorum's sake? Would be a shame for so many of those people in line now to not get in if it is possible to expand the viewing capacity now.
Perhaps they'll at least get a good view of the movement of the casket out of the building, or will that be closed off?
Can anyone help me finish this phrase during our country's greatest loss?
Tom Daschle is......
Please keep reporting. People around the world are asking me for your updates.
Thanks.

I don't think the people in line will want to leave, even knowing that they won't get inside. I'll bet that most of them will stay where they are and then line the streets for the procession route to the National Cathedral tomorrow morning.
When thinking about Reagan your screenname seems appropriate for Reagan. Hello and goodbye...and such.
