Mural by Jewish child prisoners in WW2 desecrated in France

PARIS - Vandals have desecrated a mural painted by Jewish children during World War Two in a transit camp in southern France where they were held before deportation to Nazi Germany, police said Sunday.

The desecration, which a historian reported to police Friday, follows a recent rise in anti-Semitic crimes in France, home to Europe's largest Jewish community of some 600,000.

The mural, a painting of a countryside scene, was found almost completed chipped away. Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin condemned the attack and asked the local prefect to hunt down those responsible.

"He [Villepin] expressed to all those affected and revolted by this desecration the government's profound solidarity and his wish to punish firmly acts that cannot be justified," Villepin's office said in a statement.

Vandals smashed through a wall to get at the mural, which was protected by bars. The abandoned site outside Perpignan, near the French border with Spain, served as a transit camp from 1941 to 1942 under France's collaborationist Vichy regime.

Some 2,000 Jews were held there. Most were then moved to Drancy, near Paris, and then to Nazi concentration camps.

Last month, the Interior Ministry said the number of attacks against Jewish people or property rose in France in the first three months of this year.

Many of the anti-Jewish attacks have been blamed on Muslim youths angry about the situation in the Middle East. France is home to Europe's largest Muslim minority of five million.

Huey Long was wrong, also it should be pointed out that these attacks on Jews are being done not by the Christan French (if there are any left) but by Muslim immigrants. France might want to rethink it's love affair with Islam.

"that these attacks on Jews are being done not by the Christan French (if there are any left) but by Muslim immigrants"

Yes, but it's the non-Jewish French who are virulently anti-Zionist, and have done most to deligitimize Israel on the continent of Europe. Aside from stirring up hatred among Moslems, the new anti-Semitism aimed at the destruction of Israel is quite as virulent and hateful as the old.

Does this mean that if the perpetrator is a member of some multicultural minority group and says "I did it for my oppressed pipple" that it will no longer be considered "unjustified?"

I'm sure de Villepin is "shocked, shocked, I tell you!" at such an act.

I never knew this.

David, I had heard that AQ and Hamas had said that they didn't believe Hitler "didn't go far enough." Now I know why.

I went to HS with a girl whose family was Jewish and had fled Iraq in the 1950s. Boy oh boy did they have rugs! They had rugs on top of rugs.

I wish I still knew my friend today, I wonder what she would think of all that is going on in the world.

Kerman, Tabriz and Kashan are about the only Persian workshop areas I know of that on occasion depict animal or human form on their rygs and carpets.

I am a fledgling collector and one of my favorites is an older small Khazak rug I have that was made by Christians and has crosses in the border....very rare amongst oriental rugs which are made mostly within Islam.

"I am a fledgling collector..."

Good luck to you with that. I am completely addicted to The Antiques Roadshow, they've had several beautiful and valuable rugs that I've seen on there.

They usually tell the people to get them up off the floor though and hang them on the wall!

Why hunt them down, Frenchies? Osama would not stand for them being punished.

This time around, no bailout by American blood and treasure; their conqueror gets to KEEP them. They'd better hope it's Germany again, and not Islam!
