I think it was just the way men were in his generation. Most of them were the way he was. A lot of them didn't hug their sons, or do emotional stuff. They were manly men, not girly men.
I think the legacy of his father's alcoholism was mostly that he learned self-reliance very early.
It wasn't politic for Putin to be there.
Gorbachev lives in San Francisco, not Moscow, so he could go. Also Gorby knew Reagan and Putin did not.
I was in residency and didn't have time to plan a wedding at the time of our first wedding, but I was going to have a week or so off and wanted to go on vacation with him.
Well, I couldn't stay with him in a motel if we weren't married, for Heaven's sake....
We stopped off to visit my great aunts and uncle and they made us stay in different houses. Some years later I sent my great aunt a picture of the first wedding.
But then after residency ended I lived with my husband for a couple of months before our public wedding, at my mother and father's church with all their friends in attendance. It was a beautiful wedding and reception, and I'm glad I didn't miss out on it.
FABULOUS HAT!!!
All of this is wonderful but, we all know that the election is going to depend on how the war goes in Iraq and is going shortly before election day.
We've certainly had tremendous reminders this week of God's blessings on America and His love for us.....Ronald Reagan and GW Bush front and center! I've been in awe all week at the outpouring of love from Americans for Reagan and his treasured wife Nancy.
GretchenM, I am so grateful to you and the others who post these photos for us, and provide this thread of commentary!
Thank you for this post. It's made me think about some things in a way I never had before.
What Matthews recalls most of his stint as personal driver during the Reagan funeral observances last week was Reagan's son, Michael. "He kept coming over to thank us for what we were doing. He took time in the midst of all that commotion to think about us."
The article is at http://www.southbendtribune.com/stories/2004/06/13/local.20040613-sbt-FULL-A1-Native_of_Niles_help.sto, a South Bend, Ind, paper's article on the drivers of the limousines driving the VEEPs around for the funeral.
Please, have mercy! I beg you!

***What will be fun though is Clintoon sucking up the
air and press time from Kerry.***
Never thought of that--it will be the Dims fighting each other while our wonderful President continues the business of running the country. :-)
***What denomination is your father?***
My father is a Missouri Synod Lutheran. WHich makes it even more hypocritical that the priest married these people; they obviously didn't care at all about church beliefs, just getting married in a church.
mystery and Mike, DrDeb and her husband, and Mr Ohio and I are getting together in Indiana on August 15th to go out to eat. We, in particular, want to thank Mike in person for how wonderful he has been to Eric, and to us.
We thought you might know of a restaurant that would be good, and of course join us in the fun! (But I would like to see your flowers. :o)
***I agree except for Ron and Patti's comments which were very little about faith. I listened to an audio clip of their eulogies and I remember their mentioning memories of their father, but very little about faith.***
I should have listed Ron and Patti as exceptions--their eulogies were the typical eulogies given by someone who has no faith.
Then you can find us quickly and be a regular part of this wonderful group of freepers that frequent the Dose!
Would you like us to do that?
That's sad that couples have not wanted your husband to marry them! They don't realize how special that is, and how important the Bible Study/marriage counselling is. If you can't put a little time in before your marriage . . .
My dad is the only pastor in his church--it's a small one! :-) But he has had lots of people go to other churches to marry. But he--and your husb.--know they're doing what's right.
Thanks for telling me about your wedding--sounds like you did it the right way! So did you tell everyone you had secretly gotten married months before the big wedding?
***All of this is wonderful but, we all know that the election is going to depend on how the war goes in Iraq and is going shortly before election day.***
Yep, people have short attention spans, don't they?
Oh........never mind........I guess I know. This is America, and our god is tolerance.
It requires courage to take stands on moral issues, and unfortunately not that many people..........even Christians........have it.
I hope they didn't cut out any of the music!
I loved the Battle Hymn played slowly as a dirge. It was so different. Commented as much to hubby.
The music was fabulous. I heard Brit Hume stop talking and say "Is that Fairest Lord Jesus they are playing? What a wonderful song!"
I was surprised at one choice in CA...."I Need Thee, O, I Need Thee". It's a nice hymn, but not exactly melodic. But the band did a great job with it.
