I'm late here as we've been out of town....Jane, so sorry to hear of your Mother in Law's passing....our condolences to you and your husband, and all the family.
Enjoy the DINNER!!!
What an emotional roller coaster you are living on.
Gretchen....thanks so much for all the pics....all in one place for 3 days.
Happy belated birthday, reaganite!
Maybe five years or more later, my mother noted that I had used a date as a pin number and wondered why. I hedged, but then she said something to my husband and he thought she knew and said something....so the cat came out of the bag. I don't think we ever told my MIL, though.
What could you talk about in an emotional way with children who rejected your religion and your politics, the most important things in your life? And he liked to joke and see the bright side. They wanted someone who believed differently and would share their gloom, IMO.
The goldfish story of Patti, Reagan faithfully showing up to be with Michael, and his kidding with Ron in the car--all this showed that he tried. The kids were raised in Hollywood and it screwed them up. They were embarrassed because their peers hated their father, and their embarrassment put up the barrier, not Reagan himself, IMO.
They see the man through their justifications, not through the reality of what really happened, IMO>
The only thing that has tempered him is that for his latest marriage, he married a Mormon woman; and so is not so inclined to dis religion lately as her religious beliefs have made him happier.
I was reading back on the dose from the weekend and I happened to see this post of yours about the Reagan children and their occupations.
Years ago Ron tried his hand at a (liberal, I think) talk show which bombed. Then he worked as a reporter or show host on "Animal Planet". He might still be doing that.
Patti is a writer. She wrote a lovely piece about her dad's last hours.
I too am sorry to hear that your mom in law passed away. I too had to miss the principal coverage and the funeral towards the end of the week. My 12 year old niece, who had a double lung transplant in February to combat the Cystic Fibrosis she had, passed away on the 8th. She had a bacterial and a fungal infection in which her immune system could not fight off. Her wake was on Thursday, and funeral and burial on Friday, same day as President Reagan. She took a turn for the worse on Sunday the 6th, and I remember praying to God telling him, that He had already taken President Reagan, does he have to take Sondra (my niece's name) too? Now heaven has two angels in President Reagan and Sondra.
Thank you so much for the birthday greeting. I did dearly love President Reagan and his funeral was difficult, yet satisfying. Now he is for all time the "great Ronald Reagan." RIP.
The Best of the Best!
