El Paso, Texas Named Sweatiest U.S. City

El Paso, Texas, with average summer temperatures above 93 degrees Fahrenheit and relative humidity over 70 percent, is the sweatiest city in the United States, a study released on Tuesday found.

Research scientist Tim Long calculated heat indexes and relative humidity levels to come up with his top 100 sweatiest cities in America list.

By Long's calculations, in just four hours, El Paso's residents produce enough sweat to fill an Olympic swimming pool, with individuals shedding more than 36 fluid ounces of perspiration an hour.

"The driving force is heat, but humidity is a key factor," said Long. "It can feel like 118 in El Paso but it's only 94."

For the dubious honor, El Paso Mayor Joe Wardy will receive a year's supply of Red Zone antiperspirant from Old Spice, a brand owned by consumer products company Procter & Gamble Co. and the sponsor of the study.

The next four sweatiest U.S. cities are: Greenville, South Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; Corpus Christi, Texas; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

El Paso is the nastiest city I've ever had the displeasure of visiting - hot, smelly, dirty, and the people were uglier than Houstonians. Amarillo is a VERY close second.

Boy I'll agree with that.

One of the worst hikes I've ever taken in my life was to the top of Guadalupe Peak in June.....ick.

The hubby was talking about taking a tour of the Old West, he told me. Abilene, Kansas. Deadwood. Tombstone.

When he got to El Paso on the list I finally blew up.

"Are you kidding me??!? I spent all my life happily avoiding El Paso, and now you wanna go there on VACATION??? Are you completely insane???"

He hasn't said anything about his "tour" since.

The next four sweatiest U.S. cities are: Greenville, South Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; Corpus Christi, Texas; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Phoenix? I know it's blazing hot (I lived there one summer), but it's much drier than the other cities mentioned.

I think this is a racist study. We all know how many Aztlan-americans live in El Paso and we know America's racist views of Aztlan-americans as "sweaty" and "greasy" and other such names.

This is an attempt to "Bell Curve" the Aztlan-american community.

I demand that the Eurocentric regime in Washington D.C. pay reperations for this outrage.

Whoa there. First off, El Paso has 70% humidity? No freakin way. And you can play golf 365 out of the year there. It's true EP has definitely approached equilibrium with the Mesico side as would have been expected after the borderline evaporated, but still you can whack a golf ball to your heart's content. No way the sweatiest city. That would be Houston.

The humidity has sure changed there over the years. I lived there when I was a kid and the humidity was really low most of the time.

Not so much, because here in Houston we all have AC, and we don't sweat.

This is being widely reported, but I find it real difficult to swallow. El Paso average summer high temperatures may be 93 degrees, but this is a far cry from the average temperature. The numbers I've seen show summer RH in the 50-65% average for morning and around 30% for afternoon.

I can state from experience that El Paso ain't nearly as sweaty as Houston!

El Paso is far, far uglier than Houston. Believe me.

People must have a lot of time on their hands to do a study like this. I assume the study was funded by our tax dollars.

Phoenix is sweaty?

These guys need to recalculate things. The humidity is only high here a couple of months.

Houston is far sweatier. You can break a sweat there sitting still in February in 50 degree weather.

Trust me, I've lived in both places.

Perhaps, but when you get 10 miles outside Houston, you will continue to see greenery. When you cross the Phoenix city line, the desert abruptly begins. The whole city is landscaped in Astroturf.

My wife interviewed for a job with one of the nation's largest banks and when she was told it would involve a move to El Paso she said thank you and walked. Like she said there is no way they are going to pay enough to live and work in a 3rd world country.
