June 16 (BCN) The names, ages, physical descriptions, zip codes, offenses and, in most cases, photos of high-risk sex offenders in San Francisco are now available online, city officials announced today. The information has been available to the public since 1996 but Supervisor Tony Hall, who spearheaded the effort to put the data online, said the Web site makes the information infinitely more accessible.
Hall unveiled the site at City Hall today and was joined by KlaasKids founder Marc Klaas, whose 12-year-old daughter Polly was kidnapped from Petaluma and murdered in 1994.
Klaas commended Hall for introducing the Web site legislation in late March and said that places without easy public access to sex offender information are providing "safe havens of anonymity for those who don't deserve it."
The state has defined three levels of sex offender status: high-risk, serious, and other. High-risk offenders have multiple arrests for sex crimes, at least one of them violent, according to San Francisco police Inspector James Zerga.
There are 26 high-risk sex offenders currently living in San Francisco, and most of them live in the city's Tenderloin area, Zerga said.
As of June 1, a total of 981 known sex offenders were living in the county, according to the state attorney general's Web site.
Responding to questions about whether the new accessibility of information would make retaliation more likely, Hall said he is more concerned about the safety of potential victims than about the rights of convicted offenders.
Klaas also responded to the question by saying that retaliation against offenders generally has not been reported in other cities such as San Diego, San Jose or Los Angeles where online offender information is also available. >>www.sfgov.org
they hate it when that happens, good job.
Retaliation? In San Francisco listing high-risk sex offenders on a website would be like opening a free "escort" service.
Wow. I don't want to think about what it might take to get tabbed as a sex offender in San Francisco...
More like a dating service in that part of the world.
Just curious - what do you have to do exactly to be considered a "sex offender" in San Francisco?
The only thing I can think of is having sex with the person you are married to provided that they not the same gender as you are.
San Fransisco does a self-search.
So.. isn't this just the SF phone book with more info?

I would say even they draw the line at small farm animals.
LMAO!
San Fransisco does a self-search.
I read the title and was a little surprised the internet was still up and running....
Heterosexual sex, perhaps?
This is too rich to touch...
Is there a server with enough capacity to hold all this info?
They don't call me the "San Francisco Examiner" for nothing...
In San Francisco, the Sex Offender reference is the phone book. Now they will have it online.
By popular demand, no doubt.
LOL!
Look no further. The quote of the day award is yours. Congrats.
