Senate bill requires defense secretary to report mistreatment (of enemy combatants)

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Concerned about America's image abroad and frustrated over a lack of information during the early days of the Iraq prisoner abuse scandal, the Senate on Wednesday approved a measure that would require the defense secretary to report to Congress any suspected mistreatment of military prisoners.

Tacked onto the 2005 Defense Authorization Bill, the amendment, sponsored by Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., largely reaffirms current U.S. policy that prisoners of war and enemy combatants must not be tortured or treated inhumanely.

Several Republican senators, including Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner of Virginia, expressed support for the measure, and it is expected to emerge intact when the House and Senate leaders meet to merge their differing versions of the defense bill.

Let's see here, we elect Bush to serve as president because we feel he can do the best job and he appoints Rumsfeld as SOD because Bush feels he can do the best job, why don't we let him DO his job? We did indirectly select him after all. The only reservation I have about the honorable Mr. Rumsfeld is that he is not harsh ENOUGH on these criminals.

"it is expected to emerge intact when the House and Senate leaders meet to merge their differing versions of the defense bill."

Apparently there is nobody left in the US Congress with some necessary male organs.

Look, all this proves is the old f*rts in the Senate liked those pictures and want to get them before other people in the future.

Wonder if my Senator (Warner) was most impressed by PFC Lynndie England, or the guy balancing on one foot on top a bucket.

They are very worried about those "poor" terrorists.

"The amendment, approved on a voice vote, also would require the defense secretary to issue guidelines to soldiers on the proper treatment of prisoners."

===

That is exactly what is should be called.

here is Durbin's statement (the Dem who introduced and sponsored this bill):

Floor Statement of Sen. Richard Durbin

On the Durbin Torture Amendment

http://www.americanprogress.org/site/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&b=91568

"As we mourn the passing of President Ronald Reagan, we should recall his vision of America as a shining city upon a hill--a model of democracy, freedom and the rule of law that people around the world look to for inspiration. As President Reagan said in his Farewell Address to the Nation:

After 200 years, two centuries, [America] still stands strong and true on the granite ridge, and her glow has held steady no matter what storm. And she's still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom.

President Reagan was right. Our city upon a hill must hold steady in defense of our principles no matter what storm. Despite the threat of terrorism, we must stand by our opposition to torture and other cruel treatment.

In fact, it was President Reagan who first transmitted the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment to the Senate with his recommendation that the Senate ratify the treaty.

We are in the process of defining our values as a country in the age of terrorism. We need to make it clear that we will not compromise principles that have guided us and other civilized nations for hundreds of years."

I suppose Durbin thinks we should just stand here and not lift a finger in our defense, just let the terrorists slaughter us.

"Take no prisoners?"

We need to learn from Indonesia.

Indonesia orders pirates, sea terrorists shot on sight
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1156666/posts

"He complained pirates and hijackers caught at sea by the Indonesian navy were serving only light jail terms and then returning to their ways.
"Those who use weapons have to be shot dead. Don't take them alive, unless they surrender and ask for mercy," he said."

Until the Dems show a video of US troops beheading a prisoner,
the MPs can do whatever they want as far as I'm concerned.

The United States is fast becoming the first line of defence for the enemies of America.

Get a reality check, Senators-99 percent of the time, it has been and is our combatants in the hands of the enemy , who are on the recieving end of mistreatment. Do you have any plans for remedying that? I didn't think so!

Every Senator who supports Derbin's rider on this bill, should be retired in November.

If you are not with us-you are with the enemy-whoever or whatever you are.

Perfect!

You should maintain your outspokenness and not stop until the political ideologues understand common sense again!

Well said P15!

Durbin

Our distinguished gun-grabbing machine party hack. Goes to show that even the Australopithecine liberals are being called out of their one party state preserves by the dhimmicrats to pee on America and President Bush.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the effect on the battlefield of these inquisitions will be to arrange the fight so that no prisoners are taken.
