'L.A. Times' Buys Out 42, Lays Off 20 More, Shuts Two Papers, in Round of Cutbacks

NEW YORK The Tribune Company-mandated layoffs came to the Los Angeles Times late Monday, and it wasnt pretty. Some 62 employees will exit the paper, 42 through buyouts but 20 more non-voluntarily. In addition, two newspapers in the Inland Empire area that the Times owns were shut down, with staffers let go or relocated to other parts of the company, the Web site, L.A. Observed, reported.
The two papers, which the Times owns through its Times Community News unit, are the Rancho Cucamonga Voice and Claremont/Upland Voice.
In a memo sent to staff late on Monday, Times editor John Carroll said that all 42 staffers who applied for voluntary buyouts had been informed that they were accepted, and 20 more employees were laid off. He wrote:
All of the people who are leaving have made meaningful contributions to the paper and to life in the newsroom. We are sorry to be losing them. This is a wrenching time for them, and all for those who are staying, some of whom are taking on more responsibility.
In recent years, this staff has shown tht it can make an already impressive newspaper steadily stronger. With your inspired work, that trend can continue in the months to come, and it can continue rapidly. It is crucial that this episode of cost cutting prove to be nothing more than that: a bump in the road, not a change in direction. I appreciate all that you are doing for the Los Angeles Times."
Among those taking the buyout were metro reporter turned novelist Dave Ferrell.
Faltering ad revenues at the Times led to the cutbacks. Tribune also ordered cuts at several other papers, including the Baltimore Sun.

Well that sounds like a good start
Never heard of it!
A good thing happening to our ultra-leftist daily.

The LA Times has been hit hard with all their leftist bias now for years and as they got more left, the people who read them left as well.
They also felt their future was in hispanics, so they also own now the La Opinion.
Guess you won't see any backing by them of removing illegals soon. LOL
It was the LA Times and the Washington post that brought the lawsuit against FreeRepublic. Look at the price they are paying for that. I know I avoid clicking on there articles when linked from elsewhere. I ceartinly would not buy there newspaper.
l.a. who?
Looking for a good quote here, and not coming up with one. The only thing that comes to mind is the swine that returns to its own vomit. May the NYT rest in peace (and all their ilk).
Yes, we stopped buying it at work...I told them why when they called...I said they wrote fiction about the Governator!
I sympathise with the 62 people that have been made redundant. However, I am sorry that John Carroll is not among them. Pity. Carroll deserves the West Coast, "Walter Duranty Red Journalism Award", for 2003 and 2004.
Good news bump.
I doubt sincerely there will be any layoffs at the Orange County Register.

Somebody on the conservative side needs to buy out the LAT and make a real paper of record.
Bulletin is the best in the Inland Empire (at least), great headlines and your cartoons are excellent.
