Victim's Last Letters Express Longing for Korea, Displeasure With America

By Soh Ji-young Staff Reporter The final letters written by Kim Sun-il just before he was kidnapped by Iraqi insurgents are further deepening the public's sorrow and distress over the precious life lost.

Kim's close friend, Shim Song-dae, disclosed to the public Wednesday several emails that Kim had sent to him in May prior to his kidnapping, which revealed his yearning to return home and see his loved ones.

In a email dated May 8, Kim wrote, ``With all the Koreans nearly gone, and the church teams gone as well, we have been holding services with just us five employees for three weeks now. I am taking charge of the sermons...''

Kim also expressed his deep desire to return to Korea, saying ```I really don't want to be here anymore. I want to go to Korea as fast as I can. Please pray for me so I can go back quickly. I really want to go, I really do.''

In an email on May 15, Kim excitedly shared with Shim his plans to leave Iraq in late May or early June and take off work for about 20 days. His vacation was later postponed for several weeks.

``I feel a little giddy when thinking of going on my vacation. I really want to eat kimchi and chajangmyon (Chinese noodles) until my stomach bursts,'' he wrote.

The letter also showed that Kim harbored negative feelings toward the U.S. and was critical of the actions U.S. soldiers committed toward Iraqis.

``I think I learned how to treat the weak while I have been here... I plan to bring back some shocking pictures of U.S. soldiers' acts of brutality. I will never be able to forget the American's acts of brutality, especially those of Bush and Rumsfeld.''

In his last email dated May 30, he said, ``I find myself looking at the calendar more and more often because of my vacation date. When I go to Korea, I will buy you anything that you want to eat. Look forward to it.''

Kim decided to go to Iraq to earn money for graduate school as well as fulfill his dream of conducting missionary work in Arabic countries, Shim said.

He added, ``Sun-il said that he used to take part in services every Friday with Iraqi employees and preach for them.''

Kim, 33, first went to Iraq in June of last year as a translator for a Korean trading company, Gana General Trading Co, and was due to come home next month to celebrate his father's 70th birthday.

Something tells me otherwise.Just a hunch.Bet ya dollars to doughnuts it comes out some time that he was "thinking of converting to Islam",ala Berg,Johnson.
This man served in the S.Korean military.Probably alongside American military.I doubt he holds the same feelings for America as some of the S.Koreans.He knew than when push comes to shove,Americans would have his back.

Re #20

Those who saw the beheading video said that his severed head was alive for a short time. His eyes were looking down at his body while his head was pulled up by the hairs, they said. So he might have found out the answer to your question just before he expired for good. A sad story.

That would be interesting considering he was blindfolded.

``I think I learned how to treat the weak while I have been here... I plan to bring back some shocking pictures of U.S. soldiers' acts of brutality. I will never be able to forget the American's acts of brutality, especially those of Bush and Rumsfeld.''

And yet, it wasn't American "acts of brutality" that killed him...nor was it President Bush, nor Vice President Cheney.

Another liberal dies of a theory....film at eleven....

I distrust the "friend" who received the email. They sound suspiciously unreal to me.

You beat me to it. Was he being forced to stay there? Forced to witness Prs. Bush and Rummy doing horrid things to the weak; forced to watch American troops rebuild schools and infrastructure? Perhaps he would have rather been forced to enjoy some of Saddam's hospitality prior to his unfortunate incarceration?!?

Well, maybe NOW he understands what REAL "abuse".

Not only was he a sniveling coward but he was incredibly stupid. Here he is amongst total evil and he bemoans how Americans "abused" prisoner - panties on ones head while naked and a dog barking at a naked Iraqi.

I have less sympathy for him as I learn more about him. I can only hope that some shred of his faith allowed him to re coop some dignity. Clearly he feared death. Christians don't. Whether he realizes it or not but he is the laughing stock of the terrorists - seeing a man begging for his life ... as the "devout Christian" kneels before evil. Looks like he abandoned whatever "faith" he had.

He's beginning to sound like the French - completely oblivious to Daniel Pearl, his beheading, Paul Johnson, his beheading and the American contractors burnt to death in their car and then mitlitlated and hung from a bridge. Not of those folks behaved as cowardly as he did. For some reason this isn't "abuse". His silence tells me this was okay.

Actually Bush murdered him; The sandmaggots were simply the immediate "instruments".

According to the DNC and that alternate universe of Bevis and Butthead Talk Radio...

Then somebody has some mighty sophisticated software to be able to refine that out of the video I saw (it's viewable on www.ogrish.com - warning re extremely violently graphic website). There's no way you can tell if the eyes are looking anywhere as it appears to have been taken with one of those little free webcams. I don't care to re-view it to see if the blindfold fell off or not, however - but someone might want to check that.

Was it the Special Ops guys again? The "white chair, orange jumpsuit, hands and arms are white so they can't be Arabs and the accent sounds fake, like an American speaking Arabic" people again? Damn, they need to start covering their tracks. The libs are catching on.

Maybe he's a glutton for punishment. I can't figure it out either, unless there's a contract prohibiting an early departure or something.

Displeasure with America, eh? He certainly wasn't displeasured with the opportunity afforded him by America for making some big bucks. I didn't read where he was shamed by that - musta missed it.
