California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) is ready to put his muscle and Hollywood savvy behind President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign as long as it does not distract him too much from his job.
The bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-Republican governor told the New York Times, in an interview, that he expected to be offered a prominent role at the Republican National Convention late August in New York.
"Whether I'm speaking, I'll leave that up to them," he said. "If they're smart, they'll have me obviously in prime time."
Once the convention is over, however, Schwarzenegger made it clear he would go back to his business of being governor so as not to offend Democratic-friendly California.
He said he would have no problem in appearing with Bush when he comes to California, but that outside the state he was off limits.
"If I start flying around and not spending time here, it could backfire big time," he said, adding that Californians elected him to be their full-time governor and that he was not going to risk his standing by devoting himself to national politics.
Terry Holt, spokesman for the Bush re-election committee told the daily the convention program was not complete and that no decision had been made about a Schwarzenegger speech, but quickly added that the campaign would be thrilled to have his support.
It never ceases to amaze me that no matter what the story is lately, it ALWAYS has some kind of negative Republican spin to it.
If Arnold and the President attend camapign events together, California may be Bush country in November.
Hey wait a minute? Didn't a whole bunch of questionable women accuse him of groping them? Isn't that a no-no (unless you are a Democrat Presidential candidate)?
"camapign"
Sorry, I meant "campaign".
Come on, this is nothing but a POSITIVE story. While John Kerry appears tonight with his washed-up has-been Hollywood supporters, the TRUE California mega-star announces his strong support for President Bush! This is going to step all over the headlines Kerry had hoped to get from his Hollywood love-fest. Great strategery yet again by the Bush campaign.
What's your point?
He announced his support, but the article does everything to backtrack from it...
""If I start flying around and not spending time here, it could backfire big time," he said, adding that Californians elected him to be their full-time governor and that he was not going to risk his standing by devoting himself to national politics. "
It's a knock on Kerry. Read it again and put Kerry's name in it.
No, it's not.
John Kerry says:
If I start flying around and not spending time here(The Senate), it could backfire big time, adding that the people of Massechusettes elected me to be their full-time Senator and that I am not going to risk my standing by devoting myself to national politics.
Sound familiar?
That's what I meant.
The bad thing is that whenever Arnold leaves the state, Cruz Bustamante (Lt.Gov) can wreak all kinds of mischief.
The first thing that popped into my mind was a bicycle hooked up to a generator. Sorry.
So much for all those "Arnold is avoiding Bush and won't campaign for him" stories of a few months ago.
All Arnold said at the time was essentially, "this isn't the time for that, I'm working on the critical issues of California..." and the media translated that into "I'm not interested in supporting the Bush Campaign."
Typical wishful thinking from the same people who constantly bring you the warnings about "a deep rift between Powell and Bush."
What the article really says: The Democrats are scared to death that Arnold is going to campaign all over the country for Bush!
We get Arnold they get Gore! LOL!
If you are a Democratic Presidential candidate it's a requirement.
