Fashion Designer Uses Talents to Support President Bush

By Terri Hillhouse

Talon News June 22, 2004

NEW YORK (Talon News) -- The city of New York may seem a strange place to find growing support for George W. Bush among the younger generation, but that's exactly what is happening, at least in the world of fashion design.

Elizabeth Cochran, aspiring fashion designer and newly devoted conservative, has launched a new line of products just in time for the Republican National Convention which will be held in the city from August 30 until September 2.

"Being young and living in New York City, I just assumed I was supposed to be a Democrat," Cochran said.

"But I switched parties and ultimately created the 'I (heart) GWB' line to pay homage to the president for his leadership in the aftermath of September 11th," Cochran added. "I am grateful to the Bush administration, and I hope to use the collection to express my heartfelt thanks to him during this intense election."

Cochran moved to New York from Kansas at the age of 18 to take on the world of fashion design. She attended New York University and went to work for Kate Spade, noted handbag designer.

During the Clinton administration, Cochran told Talon News that she became "disgusted by Clinton's behavior" and began to wonder if "conservative policies would be more effective than liberal ones."

"In the first summer of the Bush administration, I started reading American History, including our important historical documents, and seeing the vision of our founding fathers," Cochran told Talon News.

Reflecting on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Cochran said, "I was so thankful we had such a strong leader keeping our country safe and free."

Two years ago Cochran designed a shirt for her younger sister, a big fan of President Bush, that combined a familiar New York City theme with her sister's admiration for the president. She has developed that original shirt into a line of products to support the Bush-Cheney campaign in this election year.

Cochran hopes to attract younger voters with a line of products, from camouflage to rhinestones, that will look great in fashionable New York and be just as appropriate for Bush supporters across the country as the fall election approaches.

"Young people need to know that it's 'cool' to vote and that they do count -- but most of all, that it's even 'cooler' to vote Republican," Cochran explained.

Cochran told Talon News that she regularly meets Bush supporters who approach her, identify themselves as fellow Republicans, and assure her "We're out here. Don't worry," as she wears her own clothing line around the city.

The "I Love George W. Bush" products may be seen online at www.iheartgwb.com ((web site).

Can anyone tell me what to do about the message, "The requested document does not exist on this server."? My server is Adelphia. Why would one server have the URL and another one not? This is the second time I've gotten that message when it's been for a Republican site.

New York is what I call a "traditionalist" state in that party affiliations are handed down like clothing through the generations.

When Ronald Reagan left the Democratic Party, all that was being handed down were filthy rags. Now all the Democrats have to clothe themselves with is but a few tatters to cover up their abortion, socialism, liberal, and queer marriage "private" parts.

Naw. If the point is to make a "I [heart] GWB" logo that female GWB fans can wear, I think her design is spot-on. It's compact and light-hearted and feminine. I think it's silly to make menswear of any kind with the logo. Nightshirts, tees, thongs, hats, etc. is the way to go.
