ARMORED WARFARE: German Dingo Joins Israeli Army

June 28, 2004: The Israeli answer to armored hummers is the German Dingo. This vehicle is actually a standard commercial Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG 4 x 4 truck with an armored body. The vehicle weighs 4.4 tons and normally carries a driver and four passengers (although as many as seven people can squeeze in). It's roughly similar in size and capability to an armored hummer. Israel is buying a hundred of the Dingos. The vehicles will be used for patrolling hostile areas, where small arms fire and roadside bombs may be encountered. The German army has also bought 56 Dingos.

Germany, Israel sign $50 million APC dealGermany is to sell Israel 100 armored personnel carriers in a $50 million deal to equip IDF armored brigades, and Israel will sell $50 million worth of mounted cannon for Romanian Army trucks, it was revealed yesterday at the Eurosatory arms exhibition north of Paris.
To enable Israel to use U.S. military aid for the purchase of the Dingo APCs from Germany, the Germans will put up a manufacturing line for the APCs in New Orleans in a joint venture with Texatron.
The Dingo will replace Hummers in the IDF.
French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie visited the Israeli pavilion yesterday and was greeted by Defense Ministry director general Amos Yaron and Israeli Ambassador Nissim Zvilli. Although it was a brief visit, Israeli sources said it was a sign of friendship and closer ties between the two countries defense ministries.
They are due to sign a weapons deals worth $150-$200 million this week, the largest such deal between the two since before the French weapons embargo imposed on the Middle East after the 1967 Six-Day war.

If they want to sell them to the US army, it would have made more sense to put the plant in Mississippi or Texas.

Nice looking vehicle. It'd be better if it had a powered tub for the turret. Still not a combat vehicle. Way too high of a silhouette and it's still RPG vulnerable. I'm sure the Israelis will use it properly and as a replacement for the Humvee its a definate improvement.
