Berg calls US Iraqi handover a 'sham'
News24

London - The father of a US civilian beheaded in Iraq dismissed as an illusion trick the handover of power to an Iraqi interim administration as he joined anti-war campaigners on a visit to London to Tuesday.

"This transfer of power is nothing more than another nut and shell game of the Bush and Blair coalition" Michael Berg, 59, said of Monday's surprise handover two days earlier than planned.

"We know that the Iraqi people have not had an election yet and so we do not have a democracy over there, we just have a dictatorship of Bush and Blair," he said at a press conference for the Stop The War Coalition, in London.

Berg's son, Nick, 26, who ran his own communications business, was murdered by Iraqi insurgents last month, after being kidnapped in Baghdad.

Three days after his headless body was discovered, a video tape of the execution was posted on a website linked to al-Qaeda, leading to worldwide condemnation.

Berg, wearing a T-shirt inscribed with the name of an anti-war website (VoteNoWar.org), will join British anti-war demonstrators outside the Houses of Parliament later on Tuesday to demand coalition troops come home.

"Bush told us we had to go to war because Iraq played a part in the destruction of the twin towers, because Saddam Hussein had WMD (weapons of mass destruction), because there were connections between him and al-Qaeda", he said.

All that was false, "it was just greed," he said.

The removal of Saddam's regime had not brought stability to Iraq and "11 000 plus Iraqi citizens have been killed," Berg said. "Each one of them is as affected as I was."

"Bush told us we had to go to war because Iraq played a part in the destruction of the twin towers,

President Bush NEVER said that.

because Saddam Hussein had WMD (weapons of mass destruction),

He did. Bill Clinton said so. Algore said so. John Kerry said so. Ted Kennedy said so. France said so. Russia said so. The UN said so.

because there were connections between him and al-Qaeda", he said.

There were.

The removal of Saddam's regime had not brought stability to Iraq and "11 000 plus Iraqi citizens have been killed," Berg said.

Using Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International numbers, fewer people have died during and after the liberation of Iraq than would have died had Saddam remained in power during that same time frame.

Don't forget, the organizations wanted the sanctions lifted because they claimed that over ONE MILLION people had been killed by the sanctions. So, again, using THEIR NUMBERS, the liberation of Iraq, even with all of those killed has SAVED at least one hundred thousand lives.

We know that the Iraqi people have not had an election yet and so we do not have a democracy

What an idiot. The core to solidifying freedom and liberty is private property rights/ownership and freedom of press and religion, NOT simple elections.

Would Mr Berg think democracy were satisfied if all 25,000,000 Iraqis voted to kick his ass? I mean...THE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE SPOKEN!

Just more of the same from the media. Good news must be turned into bad news by whatever means. This election year more than most the partisan media has really had to get down and dirty. No longer content to bias stories, they now resort to propaganda and outright lies, i.e. no link whatsoever between Saddam and Al Queda.

I do not feel for this guy at all. The first couple days I cut him some slack. But his continued ranting and lunatic ravings have removed any sympathy or slack that he should be afforded.

This left-winger (and all others) will be saying the same thing when Iraqis elect their officials in Jan/05.

you got it! How credulous is it to expect stability and an ELECTED govt. immediately after the toppling of a 30 year dictator.

Suppose we DID bring the troops home now. Instant chaos and a lot more lives lost than have been lost.

There is still something very, very fishy about the Berg story. Could anyone really have been as naive as he(Berg jr.) appeared? I don't think so.

All this BS Berg and anti-war people are spouting is sooooo not so. It is self evident untruths.

The truth is that with or without an Iraq war this guy would be spouting his nonsense. He hates Bush...clear and simple. Hating George Bush is what makes the left get up in the morning. They just can't accept that he won in 2000. That will be their undoing in November.

They have not been concentrating on WINNING in November. They've only been drooling over BEATING Bush. Wrong emphasis.

What an agenda this character has...a disgrace to his son's memory.
He does indeed need to 'go away'.

MOST people would be so traumatized by the death of their son, that they wouldn't start appearing publically in a partisan effort to create wild-eyed conspiracies with the purpose of damaging a President.

MOST people.

Michael Berg has bought the fancy of the leftist press and it only cost him his son's head. I wonder what he could get for his wife.

"We know that the Iraqi people have not had an election yet and so we do not have a democracy over there..."

The scheduled election is for January 2005. Now, imagine if Bush had gotten the election scheudled for say, October 2004. Mr. Berg would be calling the election a sham, saying it was hastily set up and scheduled to provide electoral and political benefit for President Bush's relection chances in November.

And you can take that to the bank.

As I watch the cards that are beig dealt to the political table I see Bush holding many trump cards. The remaining players are constantly showing their cards and playing them at will. Even Hillary's recent comments regarding "taking back" THEIR money are out for everyone to see.

Things are unfolding quite nicely.

You would think that the freedom of Iraqis to make their own way would be a non-partisan issue. But not to lib/dems....it's all about politics and hating Bush.
