BAGHDAD Sa'ad Saddam, a 35-year-old clothing merchant in the Iraqi capital's notorious thieves' market, normally has nothing polite to say about his country's rulers. . So he was surprised on Monday to find himself being optimistic about Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's new government - not because Saddam cared about the symbolic passing of sovereignty from the U.S.-led coalition to Iraqi leaders, but because he was thrilled to see Iraqi police officers pistol-whipping suspected carjackers near his clothing stand.
"Allawi is a strong, powerful guy," said Saddam, who added that the police crackdown on two carjacking and kidnapping rings here indicated that Iraq's new leaders were starting to impose order in the streets.
And on Sunday, his interior minister led a platoon of police commandos into the thieves' market, where they arrested dozens of suspected criminals, pointedly kicking them around in front of Iraqi reporters so the message would get out.
"The police have to show some force so that people develop a healthy fear and respect for the law," said Captain Abdullah Muhammad, 48, the traffic policeman in charge of Tahrir Square, the central roundabout in Bab al-Sharji, Baghdad's historic eastern gate that borders the thieves' market. "That's how we can terminate the bad elements."

This is the hidden jewel in the power transfer crown - Iraqis can mete out their own brand of justice to impose order, without having to worry about what the pansy liberals at CBS, NBC or ABC have to say about it. I like it!

Good point. I was talking to someone the other day and I said that it is possible that some things are going to happen soon in Iraq, like martial law, and summary executions of suspected terrorists. The treatment of criminals is a good sign. Recently the LAPD caught a car theif and batted him around. Unfortunately, they may be fired and prosecuted for doing what police should have been doing to car thieves for a long time now.
Our craven liberals are complaining we should have left tyrannical Saddam Hussein in place. So how can they complain if we get a mini-Saddam, Iyad Allawi, to be the enforcer of the new Iraqi government. If that what Iraqis understand, then so be it
I agree. Our criminal element needs a lot more physical punishment (street justice) since the courts fall down on the task

I suppose it's a good thing if average Iraqis support the new government in rooting out criminals and terrorists, even if their methods go a bit beyond what would be acceptable in the USA; on the other hand, we don't want the new government to gradually morph into something resembling the old regime.
Once these guys get going, the treatment will make Abu Ghraib look like a 5yr old girls tea party.
They'll be begging for the panty treatment.....
