Undocumented immigrants may get help for college

College shouldn't be difficult for Joaquin, who mastered Advanced Placement classes in a language he learned only four years ago and recently graduated 12th in his high school class.

But paying for it will be. The 19-year-old is an undocumented immigrant. He doesn't qualify for federal financial aid, which makes up 90 percent of the average Texas college student's aid package...

Congress is considering the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which would make some undocumented immigrant students eligible for federal loans, but not grants. The bill would make students who immigrated here five or more years ago at the age of 15 or younger eligible for legal status and federal loans...

In January 2000, he trekked 26 hours across a desert from Mexico with about 50 others to join his father, who was living in North Texas and performing odd jobs. His mother and sister came separately. The family said they paid a smuggler $1,800 each to get them across the border...

I'm sure they'll not skip out on repayment.

With this kind of allegiance I'd be surprised if he made one loan payment.

"It is more pride than anything," he said. "I'm a Mexican. I am proud of what I can do, and I will do it for my country. That is my motivation."

YES YOU ARE YELLING AND I AGREE YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO DO SO! I am putting my daughter through State University and because of the budget problems in California the tuition is going up every semester. Trying to scrimp and save so she doesn't take out loans and end up in debt. She works about 25 to 30 hrs. a week during the school year in addition to taking 17+ units. But then again, let's just give the illegal a FREE RIDE! Also the universities here are overcrowded and they aren't even able to take some citizens who qualify to get in.

I thought we had a Republican Congress who would control spending. I'm really getting tired of having my wallet picked by these prostitutes and then having them give my money to the illegal alien lobby.

Don't look to the present administration and congress to do anything to protect the country from a mass takeover by the Mexicans.

Our politicians have already raised the white flag in defeat. The problem is that most Americans are so blind they can't see it.

Translation:

"It's more entitlement than anything. I'm a Mexican illegal living in the golden land of milk and honey. I will take from this country what I can, when I can and for as long as I can....simply because I can.

That is my motivation."

These college loans are just another kind of stealth amnesty.

Just wait and see. The Border Patrol will be forbidden to deport an illegal alien that's participating in this federal student loan program.

When I heard GWB was going to send a few million to Vietnam for AIDs relief (I mean throw away a few million), I just shook my head in disgust but then I realized that we haven't seen nothing yet.

Yes I get your point, but don't you think that illegal aliens are humans, and didn't choose where to be born and deserve a chance if they try hard enough. You might be thinking but htey have their own country but have you ever been to their countries you are lucky if you survive there. There are master degree holders who don't have a job, so what are they looking forward to huh. Hey and guess what I'm one of them and I bet I have better grades then anybody you know I have a 4.o GPA and I have only been in this country for 5 years and I'm taking AP courses and I'm in 10th grade.
