July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE

John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned.

Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today.

The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night.

With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his choice of running mate will be the answer.

I think somebody at the NY Post is going to loose their job if they end up being wrong.

That being said, this could be the MOST boring presidential ticket I have ever seen in my life.

The only good thing is that Gen Ripper...err Clark couldn't be Secretary of Defense until he has been out of the service for 10 years.

They could pull that scam on Jersey;they can't pull it off nationally!

I'm not underestimating Hillary/Bill,nor the damned Dems;however,I know that that could definitely NOT happen.TerAHHHHHHHzu has billions. She didn't want to go throw this race at all.But should anyone, ANYONE now try to shut her out of being QUEEN TERRY,she'll do anything and everything her money will allow to shut them down.

Is this going in print or is it just the online edition? Wouldn't they have finished up printing the morning's papers already?

look for Kerry to drop out a couple of weeks before the election due to "health reasons".

==

No, he won't. It would be AFTER the election.

Kerry has prostate cancer and they are very cagey about whether or not he is in remission. The surgery was only a year or so ago.

But his major "health problem" would be Hillary in the wings, waiting to be Madam President.

They are in total anguish over on DU! It's great! They've taken to parsing the phrase "could be named" in the Post's article, trying to convince themselves that it's proof the Post is merely speculating. None of them (except one, that I can see) is paying attention to the the rest of the sentence, which makes it clear that the Post is only speculating on the timing of the announcement, not the announcement itself.

I can't find anyone over there that sees this as anything other than pure disaster for Kerry.

Wouldn't it be great if the publci find Gephardt so boring that Kerry doesn't even get his "8 to 15% bounce?"

If this is what happens then the Dems chose Gephardt for "services rendered" just like the 'stupid party' (GOP) picked the "electable" Bob Dole. The Dem ticket should do just as well.

Unfortunately, Gore did almost win so nothing can be taken for granted.

I have almost always seen what is posted on the New York Post's website at 3AM as their front page on the newsstands in the morning. This will be on their front page. I'll confirm in the morning.

The papers should be printed. The Post's trucks should be beginning their routes soon, if they haven't already.
