THE United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating al-Qaeda might try to mount an attack aimed at disrupting the November elections.
The department of homeland security is addressing the threat and is working to "ramp up security", the White House press secretary, Scott McClellan, said yesterday.
The homeland security secretary, Tom Ridge, said the Bush administration based its decision to bolster security on credible reports about al-Qaedas plans, coupled with the pre-election terror attack in Spain this year and recent arrests in England, Jordan and Italy.
"This is sobering information about those who wish to do us harm," Mr Ridge said. "But every day we strengthen the security of our nation."
Officials do not have specific knowledge about where, when or how such an attack would take place, but the CIA, FBI and other agencies "are actively working to gain that knowledge", he said.
Despite the heightened vigilance, the government is not raising its colour-coded terror- alert status, he said.
The Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, said Americans should not expect a major announcement on homeland security any time soon, indicating the threat level could remain "elevated".
"Theres obviously no reason for panic or paralysis," Mr Frist said after a briefing for senators.
"The country is at some increased risk between now and the time of the presidential election. Its important for people to be aware of that.
"What is clear is that law enforcement has generally been notified. There are enhanced activities on behalf of law enforcement around the country to engage in deterrence and prevention," he said.
Elaborate plans are in the works to protect the Republican party convention in New York in late August and the Democratic convention in Boston this month.

Increased security isn't such a bad idea a polling places though. Just so long as the only people voting are currently living.
IMHO being a patrol boat commander doe not endow one with strategic military thinking capacity any more than someone with first aid training having the capacity to plan a triple heart bypass.
Al Quada certainly doesn't want Bush for President again. Better make sure Republicans are protected well. As for Kerry, if he they can vote, they'll vote for him. Most likely the Demoncratic convention will be the safest place on earth,

They hear Kerry's two faced rhetoric and know he is a lying coward. He wants to pull out of Iraq and get closer to organizations like the U.N. which are corrupt and never wanted to ruffle the feathers of Al Quada or go to war in Iraq.
