Conservatives pride themselves on resisting change, which is as it should be. But intelligent deference to tradition and stability can evolve into intellectual sloth and moral fanaticism, as when conservatives simply decline to look up from dogma because the effort to raise their heads and reconsider is too great. The laws aren't exactly indefensible, because practically nothing is, and the thunderers who tell us to stay the course can always find one man or woman who, having taken marijuana, moved on to severe mental disorder. But that argument, to quote myself, is on the order of saying that every rapist began by masturbating. General rules based on individual victims are unwise. And although there is a perfectly respectable case against using marijuana, the penalties imposed on those who reject that case, or who give way to weakness of resolution, are very difficult to defend.

Very interesting arcticle. Like always Buckley is right on.
Welcome to FR.
Good article.
It's been discussed many times but it's always worth regurgitating. WFB has held this position for some time. Many other conservatives agree with him, including me.
Problem with FR is the WOD types assume everyone favoring the legalization of marijuana is a long-haired hippy pot smoker.
Buckley, well, he isn't quite one of those :-)
I favor legalization as well, and I've never even tried pot in my entire life.
(It's much easier to find an article, and avoid duplicate posts, if the title given by the source is used as the title of the post.)
This might be one of the only things some conservatives and liberals agree on
welcome to FR
Bump.
Buckley's been for decriminalization of marijuana for a long time, therefore he is nothing more than a cop hating, dope smoking liberaltarian.
Just kidding but that's the reaction some folks get for questioning the motives and results of the WOD.
Great Post..Welcome to FR! Keep posting...
Whaddya figger, wolfman? Will we make it to 50 posts before being SBRed?
Good post, footsie. ;^)
I think it's a bad idea but it is not high on my list. I'd like to see a few high energy liberals smashed out on the stuff so they would shut up and stop trying to corrupt the children of America.
You'll find that almost every pro-WOD poster here is either an ex-druggie or has lost someone to drugs. Bless them - but their views are other than emotionless and unbiased.
BTW, welcome aboard.
I could not have said it better.
I agree and smoked pot a few times when I was 14...never did much for me and I certainly didn't feel the need to move on to harder stuff. It's a stupid waste of taxpayers money.
Can you imagine conservative smoker's of a legal substance, claiming they have some "right" to smoke, and contnuing to do so after our government has declared it illiegal (lets say smoking in doors)?
I think not.
What does Buckley have to say about the pot decriminalizers in AZ(?) that forgot to hand in the ballot access signatures?
WFB has passed the point where he would be a candidate for stem-cell therapy.
