Edwards' alleged sway over women not showing in polls
WASHINGTON POST via Lexington Herald-Leader ^ | 14JUL04 | Richard Morin And Claudia Deane

Ooooh, isn't John Edwards dreamy?

America's press corps certainly thinks so. News stories are awash with commentary from pundits and political strategists that suggest that People magazine's one-time "sexiest politician" is a babe magnet who will attract lots of female voters to Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.

One problem: It isn't true, at least not yet. In recent polling and in the primaries, Edwards' much-reported sway over women was either non-existent or hugely overblown.

For example, polls conducted before and after Kerry invited Edwards to run as his vice president suggest his addition to the ticket did nothing to make it more attractive to female voters.

The latest Washington Post poll included the names of the respective presidential and vice presidential candidates. There was a clear gender gap: 50 percent of all women who were registered to vote were supporting Kerry-Edwards, compared with 43 percent for President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

One problem: The same proportion of female registered voters -- 51 percent -- supported Kerry in a Post-ABC News poll conducted in mid-June, well before Edwards was invited to join the ticket. In that survey, 45 percent of all men were Kerry supporters, a slightly higher percentage than support him in the new Post survey.

Could it be that Edwards doesn't turn women on -- he turns men off?

The latest Post poll also asked whether voters had a more or less favorable impression of Kerry because he selected Edwards.

If Edwards has mojo with the ladies, then there should be big differences between the reactions of men and women. Should be -- but there isn't. Among Democrats, 64 percent of all men and 67 percent of all women said they felt more favorably inclined toward Kerry because of the Edwards pick. And among independents, it was men -- not women -- who were more enthusiastic.

As a man myself, IMHO, John Edwards is a punk

Careful ... In 1960, Nixon actually won the women's vote.

It really would be nice to think women (even Democrat women) are not that shallow.

I guess the strategy of manly poses isn't working out as planned...

"As a man I will now speak for women and then run like hell."

As a woman I agree with you. I wouldn't trust him with my life, or those of my children. Too soft, and about as attractive as a bowl of oatmeal.

Maybe many women aren't so shallow when they wake up. After they consider, for example, the fecal residue that Kerry/Edwards might be carrying,...

Moving the opinions of large numbers of people--men and women--can be a bit like trying to herd cats, but it can be done.

Johnny boy would be a lot more attractive to woman if he had an attractive wife. Mrs. Frumpy is the best he can do? Most women want to fantasize beating out Nicole Kidman, instead of Kathy Bates.. Just one man's opinion . . :)

He looks and sounds like a raving maniac in that new commercial touting kerry in "vietnam" and kerry looks like a big dork nodding his long head.

I saw that new commercial and keep wondering why all Democrats look angry and why they have to shout. I don't think Edwards is that great looking but it might be because every time I see his face I think he's a weasal who got out of paying his Medicare taxes. so much for caring about the common man.

Not to worry, at least Edwards turns Kerry on. Kerry's more affectionate to him than he is to ol' Momma Ketchupbucks.

And speaking of Teresa, what attic do they have her stashed in this time? We haven't heard from her since that last interview where she said she couldn't believe she'd married an American.

The women in their target demographic generally don't like it when the candidate's hair is prettier than theirs.

MOst people feel uncomfortable with public displays of affection......particularly between two men.....Women can get by with a hug or two but the guys better not touch in public.

OTOH maybe their sending a message to their supporters.....

In my case, you'd be dead right.
Effeminate/"sensitive"/"pretty" men totally, utterly turn me off.
Hollywood is full of "pretty boys" and not a single one of them does anything for me at all.
I like rough, craggy "manly" men who look like they'd be able to physically protect me, if need be....:)
Case in point; I think Antonio Banderas is "beautiful" yet in the the movie "The 13th Warrior" I hardly noticed him at all.
I couldn't take my eyes off of all those awesome, rough-hewn Vikings.....;-)

That's because they're still lusting after 'The Bent One' ;-)

It just sucks (I rarely use such language) to be a woman and to be demeaned like this. I guess we deserve it. That's why I don't much like hanging around other women, although most of the ones I know are sharp as tacks and discerning.

I could care less about looks, unless they are indicative of the character behind the man. I couldn't look at Bill Clinton, he gave me the willies. That was when I was 21 and open to *trying* to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I need a bumper sticker comparing J. Edwards to that wonderful line in LOTR:

He looks fair and feels foul.

Although I can at least stand to look at him. He doesn't feel as foul as some. That's on a personal level. On a professional level, his actions, words (two americas - communist) and votes are foul.
