(CNSNews.com) - "I understand you've been having trouble getting some speakers," Sen. John F. Kerry joked with his liberal audience at the NAACP convention in Philadelphia on Thursday. "Some people may have better things to do. But there's no place that I'd rather be right now than right here in Philadelphia with the NAACP."President Bush declined an invitation to speak at before the NAACP, which has been very critical of him and his policies in general. However, the president has accepted an invitation to appear before the Urban League.
Capitalizing on the president's decision, Kerry continued, as follows (verbatim):
"As a campaigner, I know something about scheduling and conflicts and hostile environments. But you know what? When you're president of the United States, you can pretty much say where you want to be and when. And when you're president, you need to talk to all of the people, and that's exactly what I intend to do.
"I will be a president who is truly a uniter. Not one who seeks to divide one nation by race or riches or by any other label.
And you know something? The president may be too busy to speak to you now - but I've got news for you: He's going to have plenty of time after November second." (cheers and applause)
"And you know, the vice president is having some trouble with the language that he uses to talk to fellow senators these days. I don't know, folks, but I tell you what -- if he needs something to swear about - John Edwards and I are going to give him something to swear about on November second. (more cheers and applause)
Mentioning his selection of Sen. John Edwards as his running mate, Kerry asked the audience, "Don't you think I made a great choice?"
Kerry said he and Edwards have been having "more fun" on the campaign trail, then mentioned what they have in common - the same first name.
'Guess what. His name is John. My name is John," Kerry said. "He's a lawyer. I'm a lawyer. He was 'People' magazine's sexiest politician in America. (laughter)"I read 'People' magazine."
Kerry described Edwards, now a millionaire many times over, as a man who has "lived the struggle of the American middle class" - watching his parents go out to work in the factory and the furniture store.
The theme of Kerry's of speech was, "Don't tell us we can't do better." He listed all the ways he believes the Bush administration has failed, telling the audience, "We can do better, and we will."
He made a strong pitch to working families and the middle class who are "trying to climb ahead" and "getting squeezed." Those families need tax cuts, Kerry said, and Kerry also said he plans to give them one - middle class families, that is. Kerry would raise taxes on families earning more than $200,000 a year.
But President Bush says very rich people manage to avoid taxes anyway. He says he's mostly concerned about small business owners, who pay taxes at the individual rate.
Tax relief helps them - and the middle-class people they employ, President Bush says.
"People need to be aware of this talk out of Washington, D.C. that says, oh, don't worry, we're just going to tax the rich," Bush said in Wisconsin on Wednesday. "That's not the way it works in the tax code. The big rich dodge taxes, anyway. It's companies like this (referring to Mid-States Aluminum Corp. of Fond du Lac) who end up paying more taxes."
President Bush repeatedly has said that small businesses are the backbone of America, and it's those businesses he seeks to help with his tax cuts.
"Some people may have better things to do."
That reminds me. Did Kerry ever have time to manage a briefing on the latest terror threat? (The one that even Daschle wet his pants upon hearing?) Perhaps between the NY concert and his vacation to Nantucket he had time?
I listened to this speech. It was pure torture.
"Don't you think I made a great choice?"
"I will be a president who is truly a uniter. Not one who seeks to divide one nation by race or riches or by any other label."
His vice-president on the other hand will continue to point out "that this is a nation of the haves versus the have nots" (or whatever it was Edwards said).
A no brainer................literally.
I'm glad that Kerry found some friends. He needs some. He can now get some enthusiastic cheers. Poor fella. I pity him. But we must defeat him. Millions of unborn are at stake. The entire Free World is at stake. I kind of like him. He would be an interesting friend. But JFK is no JFK.
They certainly were enthusiastic for him. Clapping, stomping and cheering.
I have no doubt he will be defeated.
Not sure I agree with you on the interesting thing. He bores me. Teresa does seem pretty fascinating though.
She's really delightfully unpredictable. I just don't want her in the White House!
Let the demagoguery begin.
"And you know, the vice president is having some trouble with the language that he uses to talk to fellow senators these days."
Mr F'en, I'll be patiently awaiting your speeches before the Christian Coalition and the NRA.
Good Lord, somebody should call him on this!
How can a joke joke?
I agree. If she were a little hairier, she be like a slightly dull-witted Ewok.
"And you know something? The president may be too busy to speak to you now - but I've got news for you: He's going to have plenty of time after November second." (cheers and applause)

I heard this and thought, "you know Kerry is correct." On November 3, Bush will have four more years of having not to talk to racists while kerry is back in Taxachusettes figuring out more ways to screw people out of their money.
And on Cheney, Come November 3, Cheney will be sitting in his office, smoking a big fat stogy, laughing and wondering how this F*&%ing idiot even thought about running for office.
How's he going to be a uniter when he opposes the 2nd Amendment and is anti-death penalty?
He's even worse when he's trying to be funny.
