Sheriff: Boy, 3, dies when left in hot car by dad in Boca Raton, Fla.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A 3-year-old boy died when his dentist father left him inside a sport utility vehicle for three hours, officials said.

Dr. Dennis F. Sierra took his son Andres to work with him Thursday and left the boy in the car, intending to be in the office for only a short time, Palm Beach County sheriff's spokeswoman Diane Carhart said.

A relative called Sierra about three hours later to ask about the boy, and the father and office employees rushed to the car to find Andres was not breathing.

The boy died about an hour later at West Boca Medical Center.

It was not immediately known if any charges would be filed. Sierra was not arrested Thursday, said his lawyer, Michael Salnick.

"This is an absolute tragedy, a nightmare," Salnick said. "Total devastation is the only way to describe how Dr. Sierra feels."

An autopsy was planned.

Same thing happened a few years back in Deland (I think) where low income Mom came home with groceries and got 3 or 4 kids in the house, but forgot the youngest in a carseat.

I think they charged her.

It'll be interesting how they treat a dentist.

Yes, it will.

It should be voluntary manslaughter, and he should get 15-20 years in prison for this.

in my opinion, these stories stink to high heaven, how out of touch is this parent to do this?

What the hell? If he parked right outside his office and intended to run inside for just a few seconds I'd say no charges should be filed. Anything longer than a few seconds and he should be charged with child endangerment and/or involuntary manslaughter.

I searched FR for this story before posting it and was shocked to see how many similar stories have been posted here. Apparently, this type of thing happens all the time.

Truely tragic.

Leaving a child in a car ALONE for any length of time should be a crime.

The Dr. left the boy in the car INTENTIONALLY...that was no accident.

Involuntary manslaughter would have meant he didn't know the kid was in the car.

He knew he was in the car, thus it would be voluntary.

You've got to be kidding. Voluntary manslaughter is where a person deliberately acts in a manner that's likely to kill somebody else. Dr. Sierra didn't intentionally put his son in a life-threatening situation to see what would happen.

Good. His son's blood is on his selfish, thoughtless hands.

Involuntary manslaughter then, with 3-5 in the general population.

Of course it happens all the time. There are 250 million people here. There are a lot of them that drive cars with kids in them in hot places. Some of these people are stupid enough to leave the kid in the car while they go off to do something for some amount of time.

Yes, it is tragic. Sadly, it is also a statistical inevitability.

I'm sorry but there really needs to be some severe laws put on the books regarding this inexcusable and blatant NEGLECT! No more excuses. If you're too busy, THEN YOU'RE TOO DARN BUSY TO HAVE CHILDREN in the first place...OR PETS. This is outrageous, the amount of kids suffering and dieing needlessly in cars because stupid parents are grossly stupid. What morons leave their kids unattended in cars anyway, with so many car jackers and pedophiles running around.

It was an accident. Involuntary manslaughter. If he loved his kid, which I imagine he did, the loss will be more punishment than his deserved 3-5 could ever be.

That's what I was going to say initially but then I got to thinking of all the people who run inside the convenience store to get a coffee or Big Gulp. That only takes a few seconds or a couple of minutes and the car is pretty visible. There's not much that can happen in such a short amount of time.

But this guy was going to work "for a short time". That's different. You never know what sort of issues can come up in a short time at work.
