It sounded so weak! As though he were trying to assure everyone that HE wasn't this big strong person who could kill a small pregnant woman!
Reminds me of the ending of "Psycho" in which Norman Bates, who has "become" his very formidable mother, says, "They'll see! I'm not even going to swat that fly! They'll say, 'Why, she wouldn't even hurt a fly!'"
