US Presbyterian Church calls for sanctions on Israel
Jerusalem Post ^ | July 17, 2004 | Melissa Radler

Leaders of the Presbyterian Church in the US approved a divestment campaign against Israel in a series of annual resolutions that included a condemnation of Israel's security fence, a decision to continue funding churches aimed at converting Jews to Christianity and a disavowal of Christian Zionism as a legitimate theological stance.

In a vote of 431 to 62, the 216th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA compared Israel's policies to those of South Africa and approved gathering data to support a selective divestment of holdings in multinational corporations doing business in Israel/ Palestine, a July 2 church release noted. The church's liaison to the Middle East, Rev. Victor Makari, noted after the vote that if nothing else seems to have changed the policy of Israel toward Palestinians, we need to send a clear and strong message.

In a letter to the church's leader Clifton Kirkpatrick, Anti-Defamation League interfaith affairs director Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor called the resolutions offensive and distressing.

To assert that there is a moral equivalency between the racist policy of apartheid and the efforts to protect the citizenry of Israel is unconscionable, Bretton-Granatoor wrote.

"Rev. Victor Makari" - Makari should read the first part of the book and leave his commentary for his God--Allah!

Why are we not surprised that a bunch of Liberal Presbyterians would seek to blame the Jews first.

a decision to continue funding churches aimed at converting Jews to Christianity

I wonder how much PCUSA spends funding churches aimed at converting Muslims to Christianity?

Maybe they should set up some missions throughout the Muslim world (the PA & Pakistan would be good places to start) and see what carnage ensues. Even better--staff those missions with some of these "leaders". Perhaps then they would see the error of their ways. Its easy to take such high minded positions on the behavior of others (even in self defense) when you're insulted from what they're going through.

Not exactly "shameful", but it does display a disturbing degree of ignorance.

"Shameful" starts next Sunday when they all have to believe this nonsense.

Sounds like it's time for some serious reform.

BTW, the Christian Church Movement of the early 1800s started in reaction to the outrageous behavior and beliefs of the Presbyterians of their time. Unfortunately for the Disciples of Christ division of the Movement, they didn't manage to purge all the nut cases and it's just about as bad as this bunch.

In typical liberal positioning the "social oriented church" has left its only biblical purpose ... to promote the Great Commission. Like the Episcopals, United Methodists and a host of others, the word "church" no longer fits in a biblical sense. They are "do gooder" organizations that provide snake oil salve for a an unhealing, unhearing, unrepentant, good time rock and roll membership.

... todays most important theological problem for these pseudo "church" organizations is "What would Jesus Drive?"

The book of Revelation speaks to these churches.

"Waike" Up America!!

My church the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church broke away from the main-stream Presbyterians because they were becoming much more liberal on many issues. Our family is very happy with the EPC. Good conservative bunch of people to worship with. Pro American, Pro-military, Pro-Isreal.

I'm not suprised, the Presbyterian "church" ordains pastors with little more than an associate degree of education and study of theology... has a bizarre structure where the PEOPLE decide the direction of the church... so people who don't even know the basics of the bible are not only Preaching.. but the lay folk who have even less than that get to influence the whims and direction of the Church... So it's basically a big PC, Pop Culture, whatever fad is hot now type of system.

All of the Calvinist based churches are heading this way, best I can tell in my experience. I have returned the Catholic church... its not perfect, but after sitting through too many sermons by folks that didn't know squat about the bible, or basic theological concepts, and raging liberal themes... and PC nonsense. I'm done with em, if I want a pop culture, self indulgent, blasphemous sermon every week, I'll just watch BET or MTV every sunday morning. No need to go listen to charletans blaspheme from the pulpit.

If you tell someone from the PCUSA to read their Bible, you'll have to wait awhile for them to find it.

Mind you the PCUSA is a very liberal very minor offshoot of the Presbyterian Church. They are choosing a path that is non biblical and non Christ centered.

For a more conservative branch try the PCA, Presbyterian Church in America. For the very conservative branch, try the RPCNA, Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America.

Sharon needs to stop building a fence on the Palestinian lands. I have no problem with a fence on the Israeli side to protect the Israeli citizens from the savage militant Moslems. Bush has explained that to Sharon, and he refused to listen. In the eyes of the world, it is ILLEGAL to build on your neighbor side! I am surprised that not even one person on this forum is brave enough to mention that simple fact. Everyone is simply dumping on the church!

Now if the Palestinians don't like the fence because it ristricts their movements; well, that is another question! They will have to stop their jihadists first, and then Israel may let them in to work.
