An Iranian general collaborated with Al Qaida to arrange the transit through Iran of nine of the September 11 hijackers, the Arabic newspaper Asarq al-Aqsat reported Monday.
'A general in the Revolutionary Guard apparatus coordinated with the number two man in Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahri, to provide safe passage to around nine of those who carried out the attacks,' the London based newspaper said.
It cited as its source an official in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and said Zawahri, who requested the help, has links going back to the general going back to the early 1990's.
Iranian governmental spokesman Abdollah Ramazanzadeh challenged the newspaper to back up the story.
'If they have concrete proof they should hand it over to the United Nations, and if they really trust their sources they should let us know too,' he told a weekly news conference when asked about the report.
Iran acknowledged that some of the 19 attackers may have passed through illegally, but said it had since tightened border controls.
The New York Times reported on Sunday that Iran had ordered its border guards not to stamp the passports of Saudi Al Qaida members moving through Iran after training in Afghanistan.
An Iranian stamp could have made the Al Qaeda members subject to additional scrutiny upon entering the United States.

'If they have concrete proof they should hand it over to the United Nations.."
WTF for?! The UN will only sit on it, park it in committee somewhere so either nothing happens or the despots who comprise the majority of the UN agree to think about sort of passing something like a resolution to...to...
Oh, I get it.
Yes, by all means give it to the UN.
Sorry, pal, a sovereign nation has the right to respond unilaterally to an act of war. Since an Iranian general participated in the planning, we can therefore conclude that the Iranian military was involved in 9-11. Yet another reason a Kerry presidency will hasten our demise...
My, My, what a surprise! Who would have ever thought?
(sarcasm)
Iran helps Al Queada with 9/11. Iran tells nuclear regulatory commission to piss up a tree.
No wonder they want Kerry to win so badly.
Then the Iranian regime should be attacked.
If any country aided or abetted those monsters in attacking us then the gloves come off.
I have a feeling that's exactly where we're headed.
A UN resolution to vociferiously condemn such actions and put Iran on double secret probation!
I think Iran is probably more immediately dangerous, although now they're pretty much surrounded. It's still possible for a non-miltary solution though, especially if we can provide support for the reforist elements over there.
If we go into Syria, we must find WMD evidence, or the coalition will be in serious trouble of falling completely apart.
< libthink>SEE, BUSH WAS WRONG!!! HE ATTACKED THE WRONG COUNTY!!!! < /libthink>
Damascus is a snake pit of terrorists. Tehran uses Damascus to deploy their terrorists. I do agree the reformist opposition elements in Iran should be encouraged to the fullest extent possible.
Ha, yeah if even that much with Syria on the Security Council.
Small wonder he was so hot on handing it over to the UN.
We've got the Bekaa Valley WMD sites in Syria surrounded with predator drones, there is nothing going in or getting out of there.
IRAN is preparing for war, and doing everything in their power right now to speed up their nuclear arsenal build up so if they are attacked, they will strike nearby allies of the U.S. with nukes and essentially begin wwIII. my prediction. Bush needs to win, and then hit them hard before they have a chance to attack an unsuspecting kerry in 2007-8 when he's cut back our military and defense by 40% by then to pay for his healtcare plan

2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.
I'd be satisfied if Iran just handed over the general to the U.S. That, of course, it not likely. This will be interesting.
Maybe we can cut his head off...
The disclosure has again raised the question in the United States of whether the Bush administration, facing a re-election contest in November, has focused too much on Iraq in seeking state connections to the attacks.
Okay Reuters, just who raised these questions besides your reporter or editor? Sloppy journalism. Making a statement like this without any supporting quote used to get you a failing grade in any journalism course. But then, who practices journalism at Reuters anymore.
