Hastert Statement on Berger Allegations
7/20/2004 12:54:00 PM
To: National Desk
Contact: John Feehery or Pete Jeffries, 202-225-2800, both of the Office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert
WASHINGTON, July 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) released the following statement regarding allegations that former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger removed highly classified terrorism documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room during preparations for the 9/11 Commission hearings:
"I am profoundly troubled by allegations that former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger removed highly classified documents from the National Archives regarding the Clinton Administration's handling of terrorist attacks prior to the September 11th attacks.
"What could those documents have said that drove Mr. Berger to remove them without authorization from a secure reading room for classified documents?
"What information could be so embarrassing that a man with decades of experience in handling classified documents would risk being caught pilfering our nation's most sensitive secrets?
"Did these documents detail simple negligence or did they contain something more sinister? Was this a bungled attempt to rewrite history and keep critical information from the 9/11 Commission and potentially put their report under a cloud?
"It is my understanding that Mr. Berger shoved this classified information into his clothing to smuggle them out of the National Archives. Press reports indicate that Archival staff became concerned when documents began to disappear and specifically marked additional documents to track them. A number of those documents also turned up missing.
"Mr. Berger has a lot of explaining to do. He was given access to these documents to assist the 9/11 Commission, not hide information from them. The American people and the 9/11 families don't want cover-ups when it comes to the War on Terror. They want the truth. And so does the U.S. House of Representatives."

How does a person "inadvertently" put classified documents in their socks?
To: afraidfortherepublic
"It looks like (according to Drudge) some documents disappeared while he was reviewing them and the Archives made new copies and marked them. Then the new docs disappeared too. It looks like they were watching him the whole time. "
I see. He's been stung by a burglar trap.

They have been trying to find out what he did with the documents. Probably trying to hide the relationship between the Muslims in Albania and Kosovo we supported during the Balkins war and the 9/11 terrorists.

Thank you.
An excellent synopsis of Janet Reno 101.

And, five times, too.

LEAKED!? Is Lil' Tommy kidding? This a public issue! The little numbnuts may not like it, but we have a right to this disclosure.
Amazing arrogance from the left/Dems! Just when I don't think I can be shocked or outraged, they manage to get me steamed.

Great Dogs think alike.
Unlike Susan McDougall's, Sandy is weak and will be rolled by the FBI.

IMHO, Hastert would NEVER ask these questions UNLESS he already knows the answers.
IOW, I would interpret this to mean Hastert knows the answers to those questions, and he's leaving bread crumbs for the media to find their way to the "jackpot."

I think the Clinton "Legacy Brigade" will have a diffult, if not impossible task to spin their way out of this one.

No doubt Burger leaked the news. He needed advice before the poop-storm goes full bore on him, trying to find out how much protection he can muster before he caves to the Feds.
Clinton has got to be worried, because he does not know what Burger has already told the Feds, and if the documents were marked, then the Feds already had duplicates of what is missing. There may even be video of Burger stuffing the docs in his clothing.
This is going to be a fun election. Don't mess with Texas.

The bigger question is : Why didn't Sandy "Burgler" let anyone at the DNC know ahead of time what might be coming down......hmmmmmmmm????? Seems he could have given them a "heads up" months ago....... fun part of that is - the fact that he lost documents might be top secret as well - could be breaking a law if he told anyone about it!!!

Enron went bankrupt in 2001 and Ken Lay was not indited until July 2004. It may be that the investigation just took that long to put together.
Also, I agree with Steven W. that, "Berger has been officially notified he's the target of a criminal investigation and his attorneys are beginning damage control." This was leaked by Berger's people now in order to start controlling the spin. That is a Clintonesque MO.

"What are you upset about? We caught the bastard and set him up so deep that he had to admit guilt. Now Burger will get an opportunity to sing like a bird or spend the next 10 years in Prison. Someday, someone on this board is going to have to accept that the Bush folks know what they are doing. If I was Sandy Burger, I would be right now begging to be put in Witness Protection."

I couldn't agree with you more. And I have been one of the guilty ones from time to time, but this strategery is a masterpiece. Remember the stories of how W was taunting Bob Kerrey, at his 9/11 commission testimony?
Now it is starting to make sense.
