...the Democrats controlled both houses of the Congress ... Republicans voted for civil rights by a margin of 79 percent to 21 percent, 136-35. The Democrats' margin was 153-91 or 63 percent to 37 percent.
Liars Figure and Figures Lie.
Republicans = 171
Democrats = 244
There were more democrats present and there were more democrats that voted YES.
Sharpton did NOT lie ---- in this case Sharpton has the higher ground.
I am getting tired enough of the democrat lies to just have republican lies piled on top.
What ever happened to the TRUTH?
There is no room for TRUTH in politics.
Cool your jets, pal. I didn't say that Sharpton "lied."
He made this statement in the midst of wailing his reasons why the GOP didn't deserve black votes. When he said that it was "UNDER DEMOCRATS" that the Civil Rights Act was passed, the implication was that Republicans wouldn't have passed it. In fact, a Republican conceived it, and a greater percentage of Republicans voted for it than Democrats.
This is not technically a "lie," so I did not characterize it as such. What I said was that Sharpton did not "tell the whole truth."
Percentages matter more than absolute numbers. Of course the dems had more total "yes" votes because they had more people in power. A greater percentage of Republicans supported the bill. The RNC has failed in not educating more people about this and how the Civil Rights Bill would not have passed were it not for Republicans.
That is truth.
The truth is that the D's should have been able to carry it by themselves.
They couldn't.
They needed R's to come up big to pass it, and they did.
It was R's that got the act passed. The Civil Rights Act would have died if what the D's say about the R's and how we are all bigots were actually true.
That's the truth.
According to the figures that you posted, it would appear also that nearly three times as many Democrats as Republicans voted NO to civil rights as well. You're right in some respects, but for Sharpton to insinuate as he did that Republicans were against civil rights is disingenuous at best and a boldfaced lie at worst. Your post didn't add anything, but it just pointed out a different inference from the statistic.
Nowhere in your post was an example of a specific Republican lie on the subject, so I would calm down about it.
