Men Charged For Tossing Explosive-Strapped Rabbit Into Lake

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. -- Lucky the bunny is living up to her name.
Lucky, a mixed breed rabbit was rescued after being strapped with explosives and thrown in Lake Don Castro in Castro Valley, Calif. on July 13, 2004.
It had seemed like luck had run out: Strapped to a powerful explosive with a lit fuse, Lucky was tossed into a lake.
But the explosive didn't blow up, and the rabbit was pulled out of the water.
Now Lucky's owner and his friend face misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty after photos of the July 13 incident surfaced on the Internet.
Nick Sigmon, 18, and Paul Collins, 20, are accused of taping an illegal M-1000 -- a large firecracker equivalent to a quarter stick of dynamite -- to the rabbit and throwing her into Lake Don Castro.
Sigmon said he fished Lucky out of the water to save her from drowning. But prosecutors charged the two lifeguards on Wednesday. Two other men who were present during the incident may also face charges.
"I think that a lot of people are judging us without knowing us at all," Sigmon said. Asked why he fitted Lucky with the explosive, he said, "Um, that's a real tough question to answer."
Sigmon said he adopted the bunny after almost running over her with his car, but can no longer care for her because he's starting college this fall at University of California, San Diego, where he plans to study biology.
Someone found the photos on one of the suspect's personal Web site and posted them on Craigslist, the popular Internet bulletin board, where the House Rabbit Society in Richmond saw it.
Lucky is recovering at a foster owner's home, where she's snacking hay pellets and doing well.

He was leaving for college so he couldn't care for the bunny anymore....sounds like the same type of attitude of someone who would murder their unborn child because they don't want to be inconvenienced for 9 months and just can't imagine giving it away!

Animal cruelty brings out a violent streak in me.I know meat does'nt come pre-wrapped on styrofoam, but to intentionally inflict pain is just plain sick.I used to hunt and fish quite a lot, not so much now.

I only hunt til the freezer is full. I don't shoot game if I can't make a clean kill. I don't kill it if I can't eat it. Venison is much healthier than beef.
As of a few minutes ago, I no longer fish because it is too traumatic.

Perhaps the rabbit had recently converted to Islam and Muhammed Abdul Lucky was simply trying to reclaim his ancestral lake homeland from the infidel fish now occupying it. Just think what a rabbit could do with 72 virgins.

All decent people are upset when such cruelty happens. There is an enormous difference between killing animals for food, as your exemplar did, or as I do when I hunt, and killing an animal with explosives just because you can.
If you cannot see that difference, please stay as far as possible away from me and my family...for your own well-being.

A coyote is a natural predator hunting out of instinct to feed hunger. These sickos weren't hungry, they were killing it for no good reason at all and in a horrible manner. Even killing rabbits humanely for food or to get rid of a property damaging nuisance is acceptable...it's the fact he went about this in a hideously painful manner and for no reason other than sick thrills that makes it wrong.

No doubt to specialize in the burgeoning field of bio-ballistics. Fueled by demand from Palestinian "militants" and Iraqi insurgents, this is a growth area for those who lack conventional career options.
In the perfect world, the two boys would walk away laughing only to see the rabbit munching a carrot standing in front of them and saying "Eh, what's up doc?". The boys would notice that they had forgot to put the fuse on the rabbit and it was in fact still in their hand. The rabbit would then disappear as the fuse exploded in thieir hand.
So it's not the act but the reason behind the act that makes it wrong. The same rationale that gave us the concept of Hate Crimes. Wonderful.
