Big Apple Terror?
Sources: Al Qaeda Plotting to Attack New York City Corporations
ABCNEWS.com

N E W  Y O R K, July 31, 2004? ABC News has learned that federal and New York City officials have received credible intelligence that al Qaeda has been plotting to carry out suicide attacks on corporations based in the city.

Sources at several law enforcement agencies tell ABC News that an "overseas source" has provided the information about the threat to New York and that it is more significant than the usual "chatter" intercepted from likely terrorists that has prompted warnings in the past.

Officials from dozens of local and federal agencies met into the night Friday and again this morning.

"Intelligence reporting indicates that al Qaeda continues to target for attack commercial and financial institutions, as well as international organizations, inside the United States," the New York City Police Department said in a statement released today on the "ongoing al Qaeda threat."

"The NYPD recommends that corporate and institutional security directors review their protection of HVAC systems, parking installations, and security in general," the statement added. "The alert level for New York City remains unchanged at 'orange' or 'high.'"

Border Worries

Intelligence sources say al Qaeda plans to move non-Arab terrorists across the border with Mexico.

Authorities already have in custody a woman of Pakistani-origin arrested after crossing into Texas. She carried a South African passport with several of the pages torn out, $7,000 in cash and an airplane ticket to New York.

New York is already on heightened alert for the Republican National Convention, which meets at Madison Square Garden in a month and will bring scores of high government officials to town.

The sources tell ABC News that Wall Street firms may be among the targeted U.S. corporations based in New York City. Which corporations or how many may be targeted has not been revealed.

Suicide Truck Bombings

Particularly disturbing to authorities were the intelligence reports that the attack may involve one or more suicide truck bombings, a tactic never seen in the United States, but one widely used by terrorists elsewhere.

"I think they want to try and shake our psyche again," says Jerry Hauer, an ABC News consultant and former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management. "And I think the easy types of attacks right now are car bombs, truck bombs."

Law enforcement officials acknowledge such bombs are extremely difficult to prevent.

As to the timing of any planned attack, sources say it could take place between now and Election Day in November.

As the government tries to verify the reports of the threat, there are no plans to raise the national threat level, a senior Bush administration official tells ABC News.

ABCNEWS' Pierre Thomas and Bob Jamieson contributed to this report.

Wouldn't the 2001 jihad calendar in question have to have been published and printed prior to January 2001? If so, how could the flaming aircraft heading towards lower Manhattan be considered an after-the-fact pep rally if it was published and distributed before January 2001?

This all reminds me of a forwarded email I got in early June that there was a concern because there has been a huge purchase, $32,000 worth of United Parcel Service (UPS) uniforms on eBay over the last 30 days. The email was supposedly from an inside government warning telling people to be careful and check UPS drivers for ID when they deliver packages. There are so many UPS trucks in Manhattan, that would be the perfect cover and wouldn't arouse suspicion like an ordinary white box truck would for example.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Nothing happened in Boston to the dimocrats.

So.......if AlQaeda wants to disrupt the elections they will have to do it in New York. My fear is that it will be transportation oriented -- like sarin gas in Japan attack and kill many delegates going to and from the convention.

Or that they may have a car bomb (or car bombs) rigged outside of hotels where delegates are staying.

Definitely this thread is one for the Threat Matrix.

He refuses intelligence briefings because as the candidate of Al Demoquaida, he already knows what's going down.

The Federal Reserve Bank? Their police force is constantly on patrol -- both on foot and in cars (I see them drive down my block every night) -- both on the perimeter of the building and around the neighborhood (which is where I live) with powerful-looking machine guns and deadly serious looks on their faces.

Wow....!

"The government refuses to address the problem"

What a stupid statement.

Registered for only one day and you're attacking the Bush administration?

What type person believes that the Bush administration refuses to address the problem of terrorism?

GWB and most Washington politicians still won't make a concerted effort for border control. They keep pandering to illegals.

Got that right. The terrorists could drive a cement truck full of dynamite up from Tijuana and blow up Disneyland and you wouldn't see Washington flinch except to (a) remind us that Islam is The Religion of Peace®, and (b) terrorism has nothing to do with Mexico.

When I lived in Manhattan, I knew the UPS drivers, jerks as they were, both those who delivered at my job and my residence. They are the same guys every day. Any aberation from what New Yorkers expect would be suspect. Especially is they have good manners.

Damn, New Yorkers would know right away they are not really UPS drivers.

But since you've fallen for the Buchanan lies, why don't you go ahead and explain to all of us why electing Kerry will make the southern border more secure.

I never said anything about Buchanan. I never said anything about electing Kerry.

You are jumping from point B to some nebulous lala land and making broad assumptions without any basis in fact.

Kerry's position on border control is about the same as Bush's. The only significant difference is that Kerry has advocated legalizing even more illegals than Bush has admitted to wanting to legalize.

When you start using facts that you can support, then your conclusions may have some validity. Instead of using the old Clinton playbook and tossing around broad allegations and defamations, try using some facts. I can point to some 18 million illegals (didn't you read my other post???) who are here, draining social, educational and health resources, sending (this year, as estimated) $13Billion back to Mexico. That is $13Billion removed from our National economy and from many local economies. That is fact. When you can deal in facts, respond. Otherwise, take your broad allegations and defamations and ... well, you can figure out where to shove them.

Buchanan is too pro hostile radical Muslim countries.

However we do have an immigration problem.

The 9/11 attacks were carried out by immigrants.

A year after 9/11 the INS approved Attah and Hanjour and the guy who approved them didn't even lose his job. They had been dead for a year and taken out what 3,000 citizens and the INS gives them a stamp of approval with noone getting fired.

Bush at least said he was mad about it and brought it to our attention, but what was done?

I don't share your views on Tancredo, though I believe Buchanan post 9/11 has somehow managed to make a complete idiot of himself when he should have been able to benefit having been a big and notorious supporter of tougher immigration policies.

Car bombs outside of hotels won't work in Manhattan. Trucks on the other hand ..... I still think it's going to be multiple suicide chemical attack on the subways. Al-Qaeda wants mass deaths.

"WTF??? Has he ever said *why* he refuses intelligence briefings?!"

Whatever reason he offers is bs. The real reason is because he wants to be inoculated against any kind of blame or responsibilty, however indirect, if an attack happens. "What do you mean, why didn't I, as a presidential candidate and senator, call for more security at those locations? I didn't know anything about that chatter or those warnings. I never got that information. I wasn't in those meetings." Etc.

If this happens, it would guarantee a Bush landslide.

No, it really wouldn't. Bush isn't winning several states no matter what happens. In fact, something like this could shaken resolve in the USA. Flip a coin - it's a 50/50 shot as to how folks would react.

I don't have any confidence that enough of the Kerry 45% would somehow come to the conclusion that more violence against these types will stop the violence. It's fundementally inconsistent with their world view.

A one-day body count in the 50,000 or 100,000 range is probably inexorably in our future, sad to say.

Yet, GWB and most Washington politicians still won't make a concerted effort for border control." You're wrong. That's the sort of false crap that the Buchanan pukes keep spouting.

Really?? You think the Bush Administration IS making a concerted effort to secure our borders??? How are they making that effort in your opinion? I think border control (or lack thereof) is one responsibilty the Bush Administration has neglected.

I am generally supportive of Bush and plan to vote for him the fall, but I fear even Bush won't get serious about securing our borders until we suffer another attack on the scale of 9-11 or greater.
