No...but I don't buy much music anymore. One of my favorites is DiMeola and Les Paul doin' dueling guitars with "Spanish Eyes" on "Splendido Hotel"...classic stuff.

I read and posted on this thread earlier today and then saw VH play this evening here in Denver. I'm still not sure, but I think the "regret" slide was intended to be critical of Bush. On the other hand, there was also a slide in the same song that included a photo of FDNY firefigher's hat and the words, "We will never forget." Also, during Sammy's solo, the video screens had a waving American flag for well over two minutes.

Sammy's did contribute $2,000 to Bush-Cheney 04 and has contributed $4,500 over the years to congressman Dana Rohrabacher.

"Van Halen has been a mediocre talent from day 1--a garage guitarist on steroids playing three chords and cliched riffs with abandon."

Got to disagree. They were a fun-loving band, particuarly during the Roth-era. They weren't trying to save the world just wanted to create some straight-up old school rock and roll. They didn't claim to be Nat King Cole, Mozart or Elvis.

Of the few serious songs that they've had, "Right Now" was the closest to a political song but, as others noted, a mish-mash of stats relating what was happening on a variety of fronts "right now." The stats seemed to go on various tangents, some playing off each other, others 180 degrees apart.

I did notice at the Dem Convention, after Kerry's speech, they did play Van Halen's other somewhat serious song, "Dreams." That doesn't mean they endorsed Kerry but it certainly means that the DNC paid some royalties. The band members probably didn't even know it was used due to their multitude of handlers, unless this song is actually used at rallies.

Knowing Kerry, he's probably already had several songs due to his flip-flopping nature. Just like his campaign themes.

Given the nature of the text and haggar's support for bush, it's a pro-bush quote.

There was a high cost going to war in iraq and afghanistan. But doing nothing - like the left would have us do - comes at a much higher cost. I think that's what sammy was trying to say without alienating any libs who would be unable to pick up on the 'nuance' of that.

I'm not sure exactly what they meant by that message at the show... but, don't you all remember the song that they played to end of the Democratic Convention?

You know, the song that was playing when the balloon coordinator guy was losing his mind cause the balloons were not falling...

"That's What Dreams are Made of" it was Sammy Hagar. It was him WITH Van Halen.

The song title is 'dreams'. And an artist realy doesn't have much of a say over where a song is played, just that when it is played, they get money for it.

Besides, sammy hagar is george w. bush supporter.

Didn't John Couger Mellonhead-camp sue the Bush Campaign in 2000 for using one of his songs?

I don't understand -- is this pro Bush or hate Bush?

Well --- whatever it is --- it's too vague to really be sure --- it's got truth either way --- regrets can be very expensive. This doesn't seem to pin any thing on Bush except he's got to take care of the regrets --- but the regrets go back to actions that went on for many years --- not by Bush.

There was a problem in 1996 with 'soul man/dole man' being used as a perpetual campaign song, and mellencamp was upset in 1984 or 88 with republicans using 'pink houses'.

They are different situations, where continued use in situations like a commercial or at rallies, they may threaten to sue because they don't like the association, but at single events, there's not a lot of coordination or advance notice.

Even in 2000, at a last minute campaign stop in arkansas, the bush campaign started playing fleetwood mac's "don't stop (thinkin' 'bout tomorrow)", which was clinton's theme song. Then the song suddenly stopped and the who's "won't get fooled again" came on.

----

That's what made them great. Eddie was classically trained on piano, and also is proficient on drums and bass. Initialy his brother alex started on guitar and eddie was on drums - but then he switched.

The point is eddie has the knowledge, the chops, and the ear to play whatever he wants, but what he wants to do is be like the bands he loved when he grew up. You play good music that people like and enjoy. You have fun and so do the people listening.

Of course, there are people who think it is much better to have a technically gifted but ultimately boring 'virtuoso' who can rip off scales with abandon while playing to 250-500 people a night, but couldn't write a song that more than one tenth of one percent of the country would enjoy.

EVH is a "virtuoso" in my book.

Very true.

I love Sammy Hagar, but Eddie Van Halen IMHO has seen his day...and its long past.
