Iraq militants kill Turkish hostage

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A video posted on the Internet shows a masked gunman pumping three bullets into the head of a Turkish hostage, and the Turkish truckers' union said Monday it would stop bringing supplies to U.S. forces in Iraq, bowing to militant demands in hopes of saving two other captive Turks.

IIRC, the UN sanctions vs Iraq in the past really hurt the Turkish trucking industry.

Today the Iraqi leader said "If the Kurds want their own state they can have their own state".

OK Turkey your move now.

Unreal.

I am stunned that a nation descended from the dreaded Ottoman Empire cowers for mercy after a truck driver is killed.

WOW! The Turks? When did they become a bunch of sissies? I thought for sure it was a mistake to come down on the Turks! What has happened to that country, Attaturk must be spinning in his grave.

I was led to believe the terrorists were afraid of the Turks. I guess not.

Congratulations, Turkey. You have now joined the exclusive club of hand-wringing, weak-kneed countries who will suffer even more killings and terrorism thanks to their capitulation to terrorists demands.

How french of you.

Why are foreign nations doing the trucking. It should be by Iraqi drivers and Iraqi guards in convoy. The main reason is there are too many Iraqis that are sympathetict to the torrest and until they are willing to provide more cooperation, it will extend the death toll for many years. The Iraqis have to do more.

I hope that we retrieve our bribes or stop any further funds to Turkey.

Gee, that's too bad. American air carriers will have to stop bringing American tourists to Turkey - thereby feeding the Turkish economy.

See? We already have a remedy for this.

I would propose we wait until the Turkish government reacts. The title is misleading. It is not the Turks in general that threw in the towel, it was the Turkish truckers' union. Unions, especially those in less developed nations, are at base socialist organizations. Like their fellow socialists in Spain, this bunch has decided to cut and run. That does not mean the government of Turkey, and especially the Turkish military shares their cowardess. It's possible they do, but just as possible they don't. They may allow other arrangements. For example maybe some Bulgarian drivers could found to take up the slack, with the Turkish government continuing to allow transit of its territory and use of its ports. If the government chooses to side with the truckers, the military may not.
