Testimony of Whittaker Chambers Before HUAC, August 3, 1948 (Alger Hiss Spy Case)
The Alger Hiss Trials: An Account ^ | 2003 | Douglas Linder

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TUESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1948

Mr. CHAMBERS. Almost exactly 9 years ago-that is, 2 days after Hitler and Stalin signed their pact-I went to Washington and reported to the authorities what I knew about the infiltration of the United States Government by Communists...

The heart of my report to the United States Government consisted of a description of the apparatus to which I was attached. It was an underground organization of the United States Communist Party developed, to the best of my knowledge, by Harold Ware, one of the sons of the Communist leader known as "Mother Bloor." I knew it at its top level, a group of seven or so men, from among whom in later years certain members of Miss Bentley's organization were apparently recruited. The head of the underground group at the time I knew it was Nathan Witt, an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board. Later, John Abt became the leader. Lee Pressman was also a member of this group, as was Alger Hiss, who, as a member of the State Department, later organized the conferences at Dumbarton Oaks, San Francisco, and the United States side of the Yalta Conference.

The purpose of this group at that time was not primarily espionage. Its original purpose was the Communist infiltration of the American Government. But espionage was certainly one of its eventual objectives. Let no one be surprised at this statement. Disloyalty is a matter of principle with every member of the Communist Party. The Communist Party exists for the specific purpose of overthrowing the Government; at the opportune time, by any and all means; and each of its members, by the fact that he is a member, is dedicated to this purpose...

Whittaker Chambers is a true hero of the Cold War. His testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities on August 3, 1948, in which he accused the renowned diplomat Alger Hiss of being a Soviet spy. helped to wake America up to the Soviet threat. In coming forward, Chambers sacrificed his lucrative career as a senior editor of Time Magazine

What I have posted is merely an excerpt of Chambers' testimony, which runs to 17 pages on this website. Committee members included a number of rising stars in politics, including Richard Nixon, a future president, Karl Mundt, a future senator, Edward Hebert, a "Boll Weevil" Democrat who would chair the House Armed Services Committee in the early 1970's, and Robert Stripling, who would write the bestseller The Red Plot Against America (1949).

For anyone interested in the Alger Hiss case, The Trials of Alger Hiss is an excellent resource.

How the ultra-left wing media must yearn for those wonderful days when they so controlled what the world knew that they could turn Hiss into a victim and the HUAC into bad guys.

Then, later, they manipulated that news to pretend that the commies from Hollywood were also victims.

We see this today where the neocommunists are trying to weaken this country by ganging up on Bush and trying to make it look like it is a mult-source criticism. It isn't! The same small group of anti-American interests are trying to bring down the strongest and replace it with anything weaker, here, Gigilo John and the DNC.

The NYT, of course, leads the same charge today. And, if that bias were the only view available, we'd be yelling at the good guys again.

Chambers' testimony woke many people up and was a major turning point in American politics. But the viscious left had already infiltrated the government, media, labor unions and schools. Much damage was done since. We are still feeling the effects of this infiltration today.

Anyone who has not yet bought and read Ann Counter's book, Treason, must do so. It's also out on CD (which is how I "read" it).

The lovely and talented Ms. Coulter (who unfortunately suffers from the lone character flaw of being a smoker) provides a clear and concise explanation of Hiss and Chambers and the Rosenbergs, and how the Liberals have repeatedly demonstrated that they hate America and love the enemies of our great country.

No, I do not get a commission.

Yes we are. One current influence is Bill Clinton, former protege` of Senator Wm. Fulbright, (D Arkansas). Fulbright, if not a communist in name (I'd like to see his NKVD-KGB file), was a communist in his heart. If he had one.

After reading "Treason" one changes in one's mind "Mccarthyism" from the mainstream meaning of
"anti communist, anti free speech paranoia" to "successful attempt to libel and smear an honest
patriot".

I'm inclined to agree. This, and the Gulag Archipelago, kept me up to the wee hours even when I was a proletarian worker.

What I have always found noteworthy is that the entry of communists into the federal government coincides with the election of Franklin Roosevelt. FDR brought the whole New York City Democratic Party, bloated with communists, with him into Washington D.C.. Their grandsons and great-grandsons are still there to this day. They maintained the "Wall" between the domestic surveillance of the FBI and the foreign surveillance of the CIA to continue their espionage. Soviet Union or not.

My parents, wed in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1954, have a lovely silver tray that they received from Senator Joe upon their marriage. It seems that Tailgunner was a friend of my Dad's family. Kinda makes me proud. I hope I inherit the tray from my parents, as I will treasure it always.
