Days fall into a natural rhythm for early risers
But for night owls, life is more a series of chaotic events, study reveals

The early bird catches the worm.
And among humans, the early bird has a distinct advantage over the night owl when it comes to staying on schedule, according to a study released yesterday.
So-called morning people are better able to maintain regular work and school routines because their body clocks make it easier for them to arrive on time and hassle free.
They also find it easier to eat, exercise and socialize on a regular schedule -- and may even get better quality sleep, says the study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh.
Those who are biologically programmed to be night owls, on the other hand, find that it's more difficult for them to be awake and at work on time. Their rushed and hectic mornings can throw off the entire day, the study found.
"There is definitely a relationship between how much of a morning lark we are and how regular our daily routines are," explained Timothy Monk, lead study author and professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

I would like to be a night owl but alas, customers keep asking me to meet with them during the day.

I can attest to the basic premise of this article. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the quality of sleep is more important than the quantity of sleep, and one of the key factors in determining your quality of sleep is the number of hours you sleep
while it is dark outside. If the sun rises at 6:00 AM and sets at 9:00 PM, then a seven-hour sleep from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM is better for you than a nine-hour sleep from midnight to 9:00 AM.

I can function much better now that I work day shift; when I worked night shift (11p-7a), I felt like crap and was pretty much useless.

It's true. I wake up at 2:30 am, leave for work at 4:00 am, and am usually in bed by 8:00 pm. I have no problem maintaining the schedule.

I was a night owl and late sleeper until I had children. Now I'm in bed at 11pm and up at 6am, and I almost never sleep past 7am. I don't need an alarm clock most of the time either.

I'm up at 4:30 am and back down around 11:00 pm or 12:00 am.

I am a night owl, but also obsessed with being on time. As a result, working days sucked and I was grouchy before that first coffee, but there was none of the frenzied lateness the study predicts.
The solution for me was to work in a profession and industry that ran around the clock. I was made for shift work and spent a career at it.

Ouch - I'm up at 0430 for an 0600 workday start. That's plenty early for me, but I do find myself able to keep schedules and to stay with my exercise program, etc.
