Maybe, but probably not unless it was a pretty small airplane, like a "regional jet", but that's not the sort of thing one would likely get on a DFW to Philly flight.

Not correct. All luggage is now scanned or opened and examined. Some airports, such as DFW, have the scanners in the lobby area, others do the scanning in the luggage area.
Check in at the counter, get luggage tags, get your luggage back, then go to the screening area and turn it in.
Since the machine are stronger than those used for carryon, you should not put film in checked luggage - always put it in a carryon.
