Examine Backers of Vote for Change Tour, Watchdog Group Says (Guess Who)

(CNSNews.com) - A government watchdog group says the finances of the "Vote for Change" rock-music tour deserve the same scrutiny as the finances for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad campaign.

The controversial Swift Boat ad features Vietnam Veterans who accuse Sen. John F. Kerry of lying about his war record. The Democratic Party says none of the veterans appearing in the ad served on a Swift Boat with Kerry. Democrats call the ad completely false -- a smear campaign.

The Vote for Change tour - featuring Bruce Springsteen and other anti-Bush pop music celebrities - is billed by some of the participants as an effort to change the country's direction.

The concerts will take place Oct. 1-8 in the battleground states of Iowa, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - approximately 34 shows in 28 cities in 9 states over the course of one week, according to a press release.

The Vote for Change tour says it is sponsored by MoveOn PAC, with proceeds going to the liberal advocacy group, America Coming Together (ACT).

"ACT is a 527 organization"bankrolled substantially by Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros," said Peter Flaherty, president of the National Legal and Policy Center. Soros also has donated $18 million in recent years through his Open Society Institute to groups that advocate tighter campaign finance laws, Flaherty added.

"Earlier this year, when the Federal Election Commission proposed to subject 527s to election law, Common Cause and other Soros-funded organizations voiced opposition, citing a newfound concern for the First Amendment," Flaherty said in a press release.

"Maybe big money has corrupted the reformers, or maybe they are reformers only when it suits their ideological agenda," Flaherty commented.

A spokesman for President Bush on Thursday told reporters, "We have not and will not question Senator Kerry's service in Vietnam."

White House spokesman Scott McClellan also said, "The president is calling for an immediate cessation to all the unregulated soft money activity," adding, "We hope the Kerry campaign will join us."

The NLPC says it promotes ethics in public life; it also sponsors a Government Integrity Project.

Here is the link to the venues as they stand now. If these are in your state, you can write your displeasure, or plan a FReep.
