A CBS News whitewash of the whole affair: Can Voters See Through Sham Ads?...I give up - what do they think of Kerry's ads?.......

The ad, which has circulated mostly on the Internet and received some airplay on radio, features veterans who claim to have served with Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry during the Vietnam war.

Saying this is like saying, "George H.W. Bush, who claims to have been President of the United States following the Reagan presidency, said...."

That these guys served in the same Swift Boat group as Kerry is a simple statement of fact. The use of "claim" is clearly prejudicial (or just incompetent writing).

Because (cue talking points):"The Navy gave him those medals, so they are valid"(/talking points)

It is amazing that the entire direct chain of command is being impugned by the left. Kerry had to go all the way to some REMF in Saigon to get one of the 3 PH's signed.

You're right on about Fox - here's a copy of an e-mail I sent them today complaining about the same thing (sorry for the length)

To: Speakout@Fox News.com

As one who worked for several years to help get Fox News added to our south Jersey cable channel, I am especially disappointed and disgusted with the quality of coverage you have given to the Swift Boat Veterans this week. I would have expected that Fox might have wanted to scoop other news organizations by having several of these vets on to expand on their views, and maybe knock heads with some representatives of the Kerry camp on the issues. Instead we have gotten cursory factual coverage of the story, and much insulting "analysis" from your "personalities". The smug Charles Krauthammer called their ad "stupid". Of course, pusillanimous Krauthammer has been seen in the past rolling rapidly in the other direction when conservatives have tried to stand up assertively to liberals, and it could be that he simply found it safer to dismiss the vets' claims with the childish "stupid" than to give them serious consideration and maybe find himself in a brouhaha with libs. Smarmy Shep Smith called the Swiftvets "liars" because they claim to have served with Kerry. In fact most of the few vets who are supporting Kerry served under his command. Those opposing him (over 250 men) worked in command positions beside him and as his superiors; they are the very people charged by the Navy to officially evaluate and rate Kerry's performance, who better to tell us how he really did in Vietnam. Pompous Bill O'Reilly called the vets' ad "immoral" This is a bizarre notion to be sure - these men who are spending their own money to publish what they agree is the "truth" about Kerry's war record are branded as "immoral" by the man who is forever prattling about how much he abhors "spin". The final straw was last night when the usually reliable Jim Angle reported on the story in the "Boston Globe" which claimed that one of the Swiftvets had recanted his assertions in the ad. A more capable reporter would have known that the "Globe" story was a lie (written, by the way, by a "reporter" who was also being paid to write an official chronicle of the Kerry campaign), that the vet involved had hours earlier issued a statement saying that his comments were totally misrepresented in the "Globe" and that he stood by his original affidavit without qualification. Fox News' disinformation and hostility on this story is appalling. Perhaps it's primarily a matter of sycophants trying to brown nose their big boss, Peter Chernin, who turns out to be a major contributor to the Kerry campaign. Maybe it's more sinister - Mr. Chernin pressuring his reporters to come around to journalistic views more sympathetic to his choice for president. Or perhaps it's simply that you've decided to cave to pressure from that bunch of congressional Democrats, pressure which would have been condemned far and wide as attempted censorship had it come from Republicans but is apparently accepted as business as usual since it comes from the other side of the aisle. Whatever the case, know this: there are many routes to the news these days, especially through the internet. Those who so enthusiastically helped Fox to the top of the heap in cable news can be just as enthusiastic in helping you back to the bottom if we become convinced that you have joined the rest of the media in presenting the news through the astigmatic lens of the left. Unhappily, that time seems to be almost upon us.

" Giving him the opportunity to confront his accusers an / or giving them their opportunity to tell the story of how he slandered and tainted their service for the country could be a monumental made for television event.

Town Hall - BIG TIME."

I wonder if Fox, which appears to have gone in the tank of late, would allow Sean Hannity to host the town hall meeting ?
Sean is the only one of FOX, as far as I can see, who understands this ad and it's implications.
Gibson, Cavuto,Shep and O'Reilly are all for running away from the ad- which mystifies me.
Sean should invite all the swift boat vets involved in the Kerry campaign, plus the swift boat vets for truth and of course, John Kerry.
The event would have to be totally apolitical, which would require a neutral moderator-but, someone with a swift boat background.
I heard Rocky Harmon ( one of the OJ prosecutors and a swiftee ) on with John Gibson yesterday and he seemed even handed- I would recommend him as the moderator.
I'm sure the Dems would demand an equal opportunity event for GW, but, that would be nonsensical,
but, oh so typical,
as GW is not running on his record as an ANG pilot.
They could make it a pay per view and I'd watch.

I was completely outraged to hear John Kasich on "Heartland" saying that the swiftboat ad should be pulled and all stations should refuse to air it! What is going on here? John Kerry made his Vietnam service the centerpiece of his campaign, carries an entourage of war buddies around to brag about his hero status, and no one has the right to question him on it? If he has made claims that are not true about his service, it goes right to the heart of his character and truthfulness. When you're the Commander In Chief, things such as these do matter!

Although I'm not overly thrilled with Mr. Clements' use of the pejorative term "claim to have served", I give him credit for trying to write a balanced article.

Nonetheless, the Swiftboat Veterans' ad deserves to be aired. WE are the ones who decide what is right, NOT the media!!!! As an American, I demand to see the ad. I suffered as the result of Kerry's Winter Soldier testimony before Congress, I deserve to hear the truth from those who served with Kerry. Kerry maligned and slandered ALL of us who served during Vietnam, whether we were in-country or not.

This is an issue of truth and free speech. If these ads are suppressed by the media and the Kerry campaign, it violates my right to know the truth.

John Kasich....former Westerville, Ohio representative and Presidential hopeful. I saw him and his 2nd wife in an airport once. She looked well kept.

Interesting, though. He borrowed a line a friend down South and I thought up and sent in to Fox way back: the 'tyranny of the minority.' Sounds like he has succumbed to it.

Kasich seems to be one of those "oh, let's play nice and not hurt any feelings" types. Unfortunately, too many Republicans are being brainwashed with this idiotic mentality.

If a person running for the position of Commander In Chief goes around making claims about their war service, the opposition has every right to investigate the validity of those claims! Does character matter or not? I don't care how long ago the Vietnam War was, Kerry has chosen to showcase it and it is fair game.

Conservatives should dump that liberal rag, the Houston Comical, and buy this paper if it has such a right-thinking columnist in its pages.

What does it say about Kerry's power of judgement that he thought this past would not come out? Or that he thought he could control it?

It says he has GOOD judgment. It says that he has been watching what a Demoncrat can get away with with the help of the Liberal press. It says he's been watching Bubba in action these many years.

Well done. Kudos! I have "turned the corner [on Fox] and there's no turning back". It is so obvious that they are getting order from headquarters and will help Kerry win this election. I am truly sickened by their "new" position and find it utterly appalling.

See #44. It will be clear to you after reading this. You are correct: Hannity is the long ranger on Fox now.

Kerry's "power of judgment" is emboldened by the media, even Fox. Our only hope is that America is listening to Rush and Hannity on the radio.

" You are correct: Hannity is the long ranger on Fox now "

Something definitely smells at FOX right now.
They seem to be forgetting the old adage to " dance with the ones that brung you."
FOX has apparently decided to become MSNBC light.
Fair and balanced must mean cowering in fear of the Democrats and the old time media.
We made them and we can break them.
They toy with us at their peril.

If the claims of one man are enough for the press to spend weeks searching through Bush's National Guard records, why aren't the claims of dozens of vets from the Swift Boat unti enough to trigger a similiar investigation on the part of the press?

Yes I know, attacking Bush's record and not Kerry's meets with their aims politically, but how on earth can the press claim to be unbiased with such an obvious bit of hypocrisy?

Here's why-in all likelyhood, if they're sued it'll be a civil suit. Being that there's no right to take the 5th in a civil suit, they'll rake Kerry over the coals about any and everything he's said about Viet Nam when it's time to cross examine him. Kerry can't win here.
