VERNON -- In all his years patrolling the streets, Police Chief Ian McCollin has pulled over plenty of drunk drivers. On Sunday night, McCollin had the tables turned.
He was pulled over by a drunk driver.
McCollin was heading south on Route 142 when he noticed a man driving a Hyundai Elantra, sitting at the Broad Brook Road stop sign and slowly edging forward into the intersection. As he passed the car, McCollin observed a confused look on the motorist's face.
"I figured it might be somebody looking for help, possibly lost or something," he said.
As he slowed down to turn around to help the man, McCollin noticed that the driver had pulled behind him. When McCollin pulled his cruiser to the shoulder, the man pulled alongside, rolled down his passenger-side window and made an astonishing proclamation.
"I've been looking for a police officer to arrest me," the man said to McCollin. "I'm drunk."
McCollin reported the stop to the dispatcher and called for backup, due to the suspicious nature of the man's claim.
"Under the circumstances of the stop and the unusual nature of what he said, I was just a little nervous about it," he said. "It just wasn't natural."
Leaving his cruiser to investigate the matter, McCollin had to do several double takes, to make sure he was comprehending what the driver was telling him.
"I kind of said to myself, "Is this guy for real?'"
However, as he approached the vehicle, it became apparent that the man's assertions were true and then some, McCollin said.
The man handed over a non-driver's I.D., identifying himself as Bryan S. Condo, 28, of North Pownal, then reported that his license had been criminally suspended and he also had a previous DUI arrest.
"Just as backup came, I was thinking that I wanted to be sure I wasn't hallucinating for a stop like that," he said.
But this stop was no hallucination. During a preliminary breath test, Condo registered more than four times the 0.08 legal limit to drive, McCollin said.
McCollin said Condo didn't exhibit any of the classic, combative signs he's observed in most other DUI arrests.
"He was a gentleman, very polite and very cooperative," he said. "I think he was looking for or needs help."
McCollin speculated that Condo had been looking for someone in Vernon, but had gotten disoriented in his inebriated state. More frightening, however, was that Condo originally had plans to drive nearly 60 miles to another county.
"He was planning on heading to Bennington, but said he got tired."
Condo was brought to the Brattleboro Police Department, where he was cited for second-offense DUI and driving while license suspended. Afterwards, McCollin dropped a slightly more sober Condo off at residence in Vernon.
Reflecting on the incident, McCollin said he's been flagged down before by citizens, but has never actually been pulled over by a motorist, much less one admitting to breaking the law.
"It's the first time I've been pulled over and the first time I've been pulled over by a drunk driver," he said. "It's hard to believe, but I guess this is one for the books."

I can trump that one. I was driving down the highway with my girlfriend, getting pretty intensely involved. She touched my leg and I immediately turned into a motel.
