Iraq Gave Up WMD After '91, Says Scientist
AFP via Australian Financial Review ^ | August 12, 2004 | AFP

Saddam Hussein gave up all of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction in the wake of the 1991 Gulf War, the scientist who headed his nuclear program, Jaffar Dhia Jaffar, said in a BBC interview on Wednesday.

"There was no capability. There was no chemical or biological or any what are called weapons of mass destruction," said Jaffar in what BBC television called his first-ever broadcast interview.

Speaking in Paris, where he now lives, Jaffar - who ran Saddam's nuclear program for 25 years - said there was "no development" of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons "at any time after 1991".

He said he knew that for a fact "because I am in touch with the people concerned".

Saddam's quest for weapons of mass destruction - and the fear that they might fall into the hands of global terrorists - was one of the prime reasons given for the US and British invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Nearly 18 months on, no such weapons have been uncovered - a fact that both US President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been forced to concede.

Jaffar told the BBC he remained loyal to Saddam's regime until he slipped out of Iraq via Syria two days before the fall of Baghdad which signalled the collapse of the longtime Iraqi dictator.

Then why did Kerry raise the specter of Saddam's miscalculations with WMD before and after 9/11?

Of course that's what they're going to say. This scientist won't prosecute himself by admitting it.

in the article the scientist is quoted as saying "We had orders to hand over the equipment ... to the special Republican Guards, and they had orders to destroy the equipment that we handed over to them." not very convincing??

It would be nice to see them try, but I think that ship has sailed.

That was my first thought.....He leaves Iraq to go to......France? And now we're suppose to believe everything he has to say? His next statement will be that since no WMD is there, there is no need for U.S. Forces to be in Iraq, and then the French can go back into Iraq and remove all the damaging evidence that they left behind when the U.S. troops entered Iraq. Why yes, they just needed traffic helicopters...

MAY 2001 : (IRAQ, OVER US PROTESTS, TAKES OVER UN CROP-DUSTING HELICOPTERS) Iraq takes over several crop-dusting helicopters from the UN, against US protest that they may be used for a biological weapons attack.- Iraq - Scotsman says Saddam has weapons to wipe out world's population, nuclear bomb within 3 years "The Scotsman dossier - SPECIAL REPORT ON IRAQ" by Fraser Nelson, Westminster Editor

somebody should've told this German comapany- it would have saed them a lot of grief:

APRIL 2001 : (GERMAN COMPANIES CAUGHT TRYING TO DELIVER COMPONENTS TO IRAQ) August Hanning, head of the BND (German’s Federal Intelligence service), gives an interview to a German Sunday newspaper. “New chemical weapons are being developed in Iraq. German companies apparently tried to deliver important components for the production of poison gas to Iraq’s Samara plant.” (Interview published by Welt am Sonntag, a German Sunday newspaper, on 22 April 2001, entitled: “The spy who came in from Westphalia”) This is compatible with Mr Saeed’s evidence.- Iraq - Scotsman says Saddam has weapons to wipe out world's population, nuclear bomb within 3 years "The Scotsman dossier - SPECIAL REPORT ON IRAQ" by Fraser Nelson, Westminster Editor

They didn't intend to ever go retrieve it, not even if sanctions were lifted, I'm sure:

MAY 2000 : (IAEA DISCOVERS IRAQI CENTRIFUGE) The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency, which also carried out inspections on Iraq until Dec 1998) discovered and destroyed an Iraqi nuclear centrifuge which had been stored in Jordan.- Iraq - Scotsman says Saddam has weapons to wipe out world's population, nuclear bomb within 3 years "The Scotsman dossier - SPECIAL REPORT ON IRAQ" by Fraser Nelson, Westminster Editor

Yeah, they stopped all development and decided to keep those sanctions on their country by hiding things like this for years after they 'quit.'

DECEMBER 1998 : (IRAQ, UNSCOM DISMANTLES GERMAN CENTRIFUGE INSTALLATION) The Times of London interview with Hamza notes another possible clue tog the nature of Brazil-Iraq relations in the early 1980s. Before leaving Iraq in 1998 -- just days before U.S.-led air strikes -- U.N. weapons inspectors had dismantled an illegally imported German centrifuge installation that had been used to refine progressively natural or low-enriched uranium until it became suitable for weapons, the Times reported. - "Brazil uranium sales to Iraq stir debate ," by Carmen Gentile, United Press International 9/25/02

AUGUST 1995 : (IRAQ ADMITS TO DIVERTING NUCLEAR FUEL TO WEAPONS LABS) Faced with Lt. General Kamil's defection to the US, Iraq then admitted to starting its attempts at a fast-track nuclear programme, which involved diverting nuclear fuel from power stations to the weapons laboratories- Iraq - Scotsman says Saddam has weapons to wipe out world's population, nuclear bomb within 3 years "The Scotsman dossier - SPECIAL REPORT ON IRAQ" by Fraser Nelson, Westminster Editor

All of the raw material for WMDs were given different labels by Bush critics when they were discovered. Chemical weapons materials was labeled unused pesticides. Radiological weapons material was labeled nuclear waste. Biological weapons materials were labelled leftover research materials. Etc, etc.

Pay no attention to the date here. These were really performance enhancing drugs for use on Iraqi olympic athletes who were too beaten up after their last Olympic debut to do well. Really...

We can take their word for it. Honest. Look at this example:

Ooops...nevermind.
