I've Been Branded a "Turncoat" (Ed Koch On the Anti-Semitism of the Left)
Jewish World Review ^ | 8/12/04 | Ed Koch

Confronting stereotypes and the need to take principled stances. Oh, and a look at John Kerry's positions on Israel,

My decision to vote for the reelection of President George W. Bush, despite the fact that I am a life-long Democrat, has caused some to call me a turncoat. But am I really? Or am I moving in a direction the Democratic Party itself should be going?

As mayor of New York City, I described myself as "a liberal with sanity." It troubled me that over the years, the Democratic Party had drifted toward the radical left. The vast majority of registered Democrats, and those who identify with that party, were and are moderates. As mayor and in the years since I left public office, I made it my mission to strengthen the Democratic Party by moving it closer to the center.

Gosh, ABC doesn't even have to go out of their own city to find a Gore voter who is switching to Bush. Just look to the former mayor.

Article yesterday on Yahoo, I don't know if it was posted here or not

Israelis believe Bush better for them than Kerry: poll

Wed Aug 11, 2:43 PM ET

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli Jews overwhelmingly want President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to beat his Democrat challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) in the US presidential election on November 2, according to an opinion poll

A total of 49 percent of people questioned said they preferred Bush, with just 18 percent wanting Kerry to win.

Seven percent believed the two candidates were equally good for Israel, while two percent said they were equally bad for the Jewish state. The rest offered no opinion.

At the same time, 42 percent of those questioned believed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) should avoid supporting Bush, while 33 percent thought he should openly back the incumbent.

Tel Aviv university carried out the poll, questioning a representative range of 577 adult Israelis. The poll had a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

The poll confirmed that a clear majority of Israelis, Jewish and Arab, continue to back Sharon's plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) -- with 60 percent for, and 34 percent against. The remainder expressed no opinion.

I support him because of the Bush Doctrine, "we will go after the terrorists and the countries that harbor them." He has demonstrated that he means it by invading Afghanistan and Iraq, both threats to their regions and to the U.S.

I do not believe that the Democratic Party, which is now dominated by those who preferred Governor Dean for president, but decided he could not win, has the stomach to take on worldwide terrorism. Indeed, a New York Times-CBS poll of the delegates at the Boston Convention demonstrated their opposition to John Kerry's position which is not to get out of Iraq now...

Hey, some sanity from the left...how refreshing!

Welcome, Mr. Mayor!
Glad to have you!

Now, help the President win!
BTW......I like how you have been going on the talk shows and telling them the same thing. God Bless you!

I love how the Liberal definition of "Traitor" means "not towing the Democrat party line". Actually providing aid and comfort to the sworn enemies of your country at a time of war does not enter into the equation.

At the same time, they want to redefine "Patriot" as meaning "anyone who criticizes the Government" (at least the Republicans in Government. So Michael Moore is a "patriot". The human shields in Iraq were "patriots". Jim Jeffords is a "patriot". Ed Koch is a "traitor". The Swiftboat vets are "traitors". African-American Republicans are "traitors".

Naturally, these are the exact same people whose favorite mantra is "don't question my patriotism".

Thanks for posting. I emailed the column to my sister, a liberal Democrat from Barney Frank's district in Mass. It was perfect ammo for the argument I was having with her to the effect that W, and conservative Christians in general, are better for Israel than Dems, and that the real anti-Semitism in America today is found largely on the left.

The only way to beat terrorism is to compromise.

"OK, we'll let you bring down the WTC North Tower, and kill 1,500 innocent people. But darn it, we think it would be more sensitive of you to spare the South Tower. Please."

See ya, troll.

No, supporting Bush's "war on terrorism" is misguided at best. You cannot defeat terrorism by invading countries and killing innocent people and leaving the country in ruins. This actually aids terrorism. I bet that there are more willing Al Queda members now than before the invasion of Iraq.

The only way to beat terrorism is to compromise.

Surely you jest.

"war on terrorism" is misguided at best.

After 9/11, the Bush administration outlined a policy wherein the US would fight terrorism on their soil, not ours. "At best" the US has not had another attack on US soil since we invaded Afganistan..."at best" the women of Afganistan are learning to read and preparing to vote in elections, "at best" the threat of addam Hussein (who was paying $25,000 to familys of homocide bombers) is ended, "at best" the people of Iraq are learning to govern themselves, "at best" our enemies are being hunted down and eliminated...

>>I [Koch] believe most Jewish leaders will concede that of all U. S. presidents, Bush 43 has been the most supportive and protective of the security of the State of Israel.

This is a powerful statement by Koch! It demonstrates the President's heart is in the right place on Israel.

"...over the years, the Democratic Party had drifted toward the radical left"
Yes, and just as disturbing, the Democrat Party has drifted into decadence and moral depravity.

My parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were all Democrats. If they were alive today, they would renounce and repudiate the Democrat Party immediatly and in no uncertain terms.

"the issue of international terrorism trumps all other issues."
Yes. It does. The United States is at war. The American people do not want to be and never wanted to be. The U.S. was attacked--as certainly as it was attacked at Pearl Harbor--and, whether we like it or not--and we do not--we are at war, and we must defeat this enemy.
"Over the years, I have expressed my anxieties at the escalating worldwide anti-Semitism..."
Yes. And so have I.
"We haven't seen the likes of this rising tide of hatred directed at Jews since the 30s."
No, we have not, and we must be alarmed.

The present situation is astonishingly similar to that of Europe during the rise of Naziism in the 1920's and 30's.

We have two choices: confrontation or capitulation. Appeasement is capitulation.

"I support President Bush for reelection.

I support him because of the Bush Doctrine, "we will go after the terrorists and the countries that harbor them."

He has demonstrated that he means it by invading Afghanistan and Iraq, both threats to their regions and to the U.S.

I do not believe that the Democratic Party...has the stomach to take on worldwide terrorism."

It obviously does not. And its leaders do not have the moral and strategic clarity, even if they had the will--which they do not--to lead the U.S. and the world.

The contemporary Democrat Party is mired in decadence, dysfunction, and moral depravity.

It cannot be trusted.

"The Islamic terrorists...want to kill us..."
Yes, they have said so, and they have demonstrated their sincerity.
"...and there are hundreds of millions of them.

"I want a President who is willing to go after them before they have the chance to kill us."

Keep up the good work, Ed. Perhaps you can help bring much needed clarity and resolve to the American people and especially to those who are still misguided enough to support Democrat politicians.

A friend of mine (very involved Jewish activist) wrote me today that he's sooner vote for a bag of nails than for Bush:

Hildy, I would rather eat nails than vote for Bush. I believe he is a corrupt man and I will be sure to go to the polls and vote him out. He will be a one term president like his father. Harry Brown in 2004!

sigh...
